CEO/Director of Aviation

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)

Dear Friends,

As the end of the first quarter of 2024 quickly nears, this leap year feels like we're in a sprint and not a marathon. So, how are those New Year's resolutions going?

February delivered important news for FLL, and the Broward County Aviation Department (BCAD) is thrilled to share it via this newsletter. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarded FLL a $50 million grant (the largest airport allocation for this cycle) as part of nearly $1 billion in funding under the FY 2024 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law competitive Airport Terminal Program. This multimillion-dollar FAA grant will fund a portion of the airport's Terminal Connectors project, which involves building enclosed post-security walkways between Terminals 1 and 2 and Terminals 2 and 3. The project includes modifications to existing terminals, such as enhanced security checkpoints, an upgraded bag hall, and more concessions.

In February, WPLG-10 aired a report about illegal ride solicitation, an ongoing challenge at South Florida airports and others nationwide. As FLL's operator, BCAD is committed to providing a safe environment for our guests. Here are some initiatives we're taking to identify and deter these solicitors: a Ground Transportation Enforcement Team launched in June 2023 dedicated to this issue, and BCAD conducts multiple joint undercover enforcement efforts with the Broward Sheriff's Office to catch violators. Additionally, we continue to advise guests through our Ride Safe campaign signage to safeguard themselves and their personal property by not accepting ride offers from these "friendly strangers." Read more in the story below.

As always, thanks for flying with FLL.

New FBO Takes Shape

New hangar under construction

Hangar and terminal under construction

A new FLL fixed-base operator (FBO), Fontainebleau Aviation, is rising on the 25-acre site of a former Jetscape-led project along Lee Wagener Boulevard. After stalling in the pandemic, Canada’s Skyservice Business Aviation recently breathed new life into the development after acquiring a 51% equity interest in the new FBO from Azorra Aviation, providing Skyservice a majority stake in Fontainebleau Aviation. The $31 million project is set for completion by June 2025. The new FBO facility will include a 9,000+ square foot terminal and a 98,000+ square foot hangar, both with office space.

Server Bots

Robot brings food to guests in restaurant at FLL

Helpful technology

Starting last month, FLL’s Bokampers restaurant has put technology to work, rolling out two LG Electronics robots to help with daily tasks. The robots named Sonny and Cher can deliver food and help clear tables, which is especially useful during peak hours so servers and cashiers can directly engage with guests without having to leave their areas, according to concessionaire Delaware North. Both robots can carry up to 66 pounds and work 11 hours straight with help from their built-in sensors and a 3D camera to navigate the restaurant.

Bokampers is located in the Terminal 3, Concourse E/F connector walkway.

Valentine's Fun

Memories were made at FLL this Valentine’s Day. Holiday-themed inflatables were located pre-security in every terminal for guests to take photos with their loved ones. Terminal Tunes entertainer Marco Barrios also performed from 9-11AM in the baggage claim level of Terminal 1 singing love songs that helped to celebrate the day.

Ride Safe Reminder

Refuse illegal rides

As FLL's operator, BCAD is committed to applying resources to combat illegal ride solicitation and will work steadfastly with our airport's law enforcement partner and other Broward County agencies to discourage their presence here. Most FLL ground transportation (GT) movements are by legitimate and authorized providers, including taxis and ride-share entities. In 2023, FLL had over three million authorized GT operations. Watch for Ride Safe messages on FLL bag claim carousels, flight information display screens, Wi-Fi login page, website, and via terminal announcements. See Something, Say Something

CLEAR employee heeds the call

In early February, Airport Manager for Security Clark Gay (left) presented CLEAR employee Hector Rodriguez (second right) with a certificate of appreciation and some logoed airport gifts for his proactive reporting of an unusual occurrence to his supervisor while on duty at FLL in mid-December. This information quickly proved valuable in aiding the response of BCAD’s Security Division and its law enforcement partner to an ensuing security-related airport incident. Gay commended Rodriguez for his prompt “See Something, Say Something” action, a familiar mantra in U.S. airports that emphasizes everyone has a role to play in helping to keep our communities safe.
