Dear Friends,
June was quite literally a huge ball of excitement at FLL, as we enjoyed our time as one of several Broward County locations where residents and visitors could take photos with the giant World Cup 2026 symbol as it rolled through town to promote the premier international soccer tournament matches in South Florida.
In addition to the excitement created by the FIFA World Cup, the world's oldest international soccer tournament, FLL recognized Juneteenth (June 19) and Flag Day (June 14) during the month for their respective significance in America's history.
With summer officially here and its increasingly warm temps, let's remember to take the necessary precautions, such as keeping hydrated and applying sunscreen when enjoying our favorite outdoor activities.
Unfortunately, afternoon rainstorms are also commonplace in summertime and during the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June through November. As such, summer thunderstorms with lightning can temporarily halt airfield activity so outdoor crews can seek shelter from potential harm. If travel disruptions, such as flight or baggage delays, occur during these times, we ask for your patience and understanding as we prioritize safe operations.
It's America's 250th birthday on July 4, and there are many U.S. events planned to commemorate this milestone, including a few at FLL. Stay tuned to our July issue to read about them. Our Broward County Aviation Department (BCAD) team wishes you a safe, healthy, and wonderful Independence Day holiday. Fort Lauderdale is expected to be one of the top 10 U.S. Independence Day holiday destinations, so we look forward to welcoming you at FLL.
With the World Cup 2026 matches continuing through mid-July, FLL expects to see more soccer fans in South Florida for the final three of seven games hosted in the Miami area, scheduled for July 3, July 11, and July 18.
Happy summering wherever your travels take you!

More flights and new routes
| | Avianca is making travel between Bogota and Fort Lauderdale easier. The airline recently expanded operations at FLL with a second daily flight to Bogota, giving travelers more options and flexibility when planning their trips. Additionally, the airline plans to add two new destinations in Colombia – Cali and Barranquilla starting July 15. The new routes and increased frequency on existing services will enhance FLL's international lineup and provide more ways for travelers to visit Colombia's major cities. To accommodate this expansion, Avianca relocated its FLL operations on June 29 from Terminal 1 to Terminal 4. | | | | Another international flight option is on the horizon for FLL courtesy of JetBlue Airways. In June, the carrier announced plans to launch nonstop flights between Fort Lauderdale and Maiquetía, Venezuela, serving Caracas. The new service should begin by year-end, pending government approvals, with tickets expected to go on sale in the coming months. The route will provide travelers with a convenient option while strengthening connectivity between South Florida and South America. | | | | IBC Airways resumed operations at FLL on June 16 with nonstop flights to Les Cayes, Haiti, from Terminal 1. The airline is offering two weekly flights to the seaport town along Haiti’s southern coast, giving travelers more choices for flying between South Florida and Haiti to visit family, friends, and communities in the Caribbean island. Currently, only Les Cayes and Cap Haitien (Sunrise Airways) are served nonstop from FLL. Flights to Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince remain suspended due to security-related instability. | | | | World Cup excitement arrived at FLL in mid-June with a larger-than-life soccer ball displayed on the departures level outside between Terminals 1 and 2. The eye-catching sports-themed installation featured an intersecting ribbon in shades of pink, blue, and orange on a white background. One side read “One Game, One Passion, Broward," and the other read "World Cup 2026." The display celebrated Broward County’s sponsorship of events to support the Miami area’s role as a host city for seven matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Teams playing at the Miami Stadium included Colombia, Scotland, and Brazil. This marked the first time the World Cup has been hosted in South Florida, and FLL proudly joined the celebration. | | Promoting Business Opportunities | FLL, transit and seaport focus | | The BCAD team participated in the 2026 Broward & Beyond Business Conference, "Businesses Are the Heart of Our Economy," on June 12 at the Broward County Convention Center. CEO/Director of Aviation Mark Gale joined other county agency leaders for a panel discussion highlighting opportunities tied to FLL, Port Everglades, and Broward Transit's growing transportation network. The conference also spotlighted the seaport’s Foreign-Trade Zone 25, and its role in supporting international trade. The event brought together businesses, nonprofits, and government partners to explore resources, procurement opportunities, and strategies to drive economic growth across the county. | | |

| During the Port Everglades Association's 2026 Economic Engine Performance Report business briefing in Fort Lauderdale on June 5, CEO/Aviation Director, Mark Gale discussed how other carriers are adding new service to help offset the loss of Spirit Airlines' operations, how BCAD is working to prepare the vacant Spirit space for reallocation to interested airlines as soon as it's feasible, and also shared updates on current construction projects, such as the Terminal Connectors and Terminal 5. Other CEOs from Broward County Transit, Port Everglades, and Visit Lauderdale also participated in the panel discussion. | | |
| The 2026 Airports Conference of the Americas (COA), hosted by FLL, brought together airport and airline leaders for three days of timely, forward-looking conversations. The event, held through June 3, featured strong participation from FLL leadership and subject-matter experts who shared insights on advanced air mobility, political impacts on airport operations, and disaster recovery and resilience. Sessions also highlighted social media best practices and other topics in the airport industry.
