Our monthly newsletter is the source for Good and Green updates, activities, events, and opportunities in the City of Sunrise, Florida. We also want to recognize outstanding community leaders and organizations. Are You a Water Whiz? Tell us and you could win!

The Broward Water Partnership has launched the Water Whiz Challenge.

Calling all Sunrise Utilities customers to share what you are doing to protect and conserve natural resources, especially water. Water connects everything.

Out for a walk in your neighborhood, and pick up litter as you go? #WaterWhiz!

Are your kids at home coloring for conservation? #WaterWhiz! Download Coloring Sheets

Did you install moisture sensors or a rain gauge in your landscaping? #WaterWhiz!

There are so many things you can show and tell us about. Enter over and over and over again and don’t forget the hashtag. Tell us how you are a Water Whiz .

The winner will get made into a cartoon character and animation to promote and educate on the importance of water conservation.

For each submission, you get points. Each point is an entry to win. Here are a few tasks that qualify for points:

Tell us about the issues that you see related to climate change, sustainability, and conservation.
Take the Sunrise Pass Up Plastics Pledge.
Create videos related to conservation, climate change, and/or sustainability, and post on Facebook using #WaterWhiz.
Come up with ideas for our next campaign.

Keeping Active and Connecting to Nature while Staying Home

There are options for staying physically active at home. You could do a one minute march in place , walk up and down your stairs, turn on some music and dance, do squats during commercials while you're watching TV, use hand weights - or even a soup can - to do arm curls.

You can stay at home and still connect to nature. Doing something as simple as opening your windows for fresh air in the morning, or sitting out on your patio can make a big difference for your emotional health.

For live streaming of daily virtual workouts, check out Virtual YMCA. Another resource is Baptist Health South Florida offering virtual classes from managing anxiety, meditation, and yoga to line dancing and Zumba. If you are a Disney fan search on YouTube for "Disney Zumba" for some fun dance moves to your favorite Disney songs!

Social distancing may keep us from hugging one another, but we can still hug a tree! To celebrate Arbor Day this year, learn about the history of arbor day and the benefits of trees from Arbor Day Foundation. Feeling poetic? Write an Arbor Day Haiku about one of the trees in your yard.

Together We Can Celebrate Virtually, Join the Earth Day Network Online Starting April 19th.

We Are Still In - as Earth Day Turns 50!

Let's take a moment to acknowledge local milestones as we plan for the next 50 years.

On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans — 10% of the U.S. population at the time — took to the street, college campuses, and hundreds of cities to protest and demand a new way forward for our planet. The first Earth Day is credited with launching the modern environmental movement.

Since 1970, Earth Day activities and celebrations have increased awareness of the planet we live on, pollution, climate change, endangered species, and many other environmental issues.

This April also marks the inaugural year for the implementation of the Sunrise Sustainability Action Plan. As we celebrate the 50 ^th year of Earth Day, we can be proud of the sustainability milestones that have marked our journey as we continue to expand our sustainability efforts in the City:

1988 - Sunrise achieved the Tree City USA certification through the Arbor Day Foundation, and Sunrise continues to meet the annual requirements.

2009 - Sunrise held its first Earth Day Festival which becomes an annual event. In conjunction with Earth Day, Sunrise celebrates Arbor Day by planting a tree at the festival each year.

2013 - Sunrise became a municipal partner in support of Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact and signed the Mayor’s Climate Action Pledge.

2016 - Sunrise registered with the National Wildlife Federation, and launched the Be A Butterfly Hero Program in the City. In just three short years the City was officially certified as a Community Wildlife Habitat in 2019.

2020 - Sunrise rolled out its first fully Electric Vehicle (EV) and EV Charging Station for City Fleet.
