We also want to recognize outstanding community leaders and organizations. Mayor presenting large check to ConservationPays winner

3rd Place Winner Galie Verret with 6,683 points, who played consistently over a month stated: "Conservation Pays helps me to be more aware of what I do at home to both save money and save our environment."

3rd Place Winner Christopher Wallace with 9,259 points, who was playing non-stop for the final three days of the game commented: “Who knew that one day our interest in conservation would really pay off!”

Sunrise Residents Play, Conserve, and Win!

Sunrise is one of 17 city and water utility partners that form the Broward Water Partnership offering ConservationPays - a multi-year program that provides rebates, and water conservation tools and tips. Since program inception in 2005, the City has provided over 3,700 toilet rebates to Sunrise Utilities customers, equating to a savings of over 512 million gallons of water!

The goal of ConservationPays is to educate and engage about water conservation. For the past seven years, program campaigns have been developed to engage people by providing opportunities to win.

From February to April, the Broward Water Partnership promoted Play ConservationPays and Win online game. Residents who played showed off their knowledge about water conservation, climate change, and sustainability. Players answered questions and completed quests to move through various levels to earn drops, unlocking content, and earning points along the way. Each point was an entry to win one of the top prizes. Plus, hundreds of instant win prizes ranging from hand held vacuums to 3-night resort stays were distributed.

Two Sunrise residents tied for third place, and were each presented with their $500 cash prize at the June 25th City Commission meeting. Both were recipients of instant win prizes during the game too!

Also at the meeting, the City was presented a trophy for "Most Community Engagement" out of all the partners, Sunrise had nearly 16% of the players.

City Hall Goes Wild

In celebration of Pollinator Week 2019 , students from the Piper High School internship program, in partnership with the City, worked alongside sustainability staff to add pollinator-friendly plants to the container gardens at City Hall. The students also got to learn the importance of pollinators and what the City is doing to protect and restore pollinator habitats. Incorporating habitat gardens like the one at City Hall helps toward achieving a citywide Community Wildlife Habitat™

designation.

Service Spotlight

The City of Sunrise Outstanding Citizenship Scholarship program recognizes students that have distinguished themselves both academically and as members of the Sunrise community. Ernesto Velasquez was one of two students selected to receive the scholarship, and was recognized at the June 11 City Commission meeting.

As a Sunrise Good and Green volunteer, Ernesto contributed over 100 hours to helping with the City's sustainability initiatives. Ernesto was accepted to the FIU Honors College where he will study International Business.

Celebrate the Red, White & Blue - a little greener this year!

Ditch the Disposable Plastics. Skip the plastic utensils, bags, and straws which are not recyclable and are an environmental hazard.

Fire up that Propane Grill. We are not telling all you Grill Masters how to grill! If you are looking to reduce your carbon footprint then technically propane grills are the more eco-friendly option over charcoal.

Eat Your Patriotic Fruits & Veggies. Make your celebratory menu more sustainable by swamping a few meat dishes with plant-based options. Plus, your vegetarian friends will appreciate your spread! Recipe Ideas

Leave no Trace. With big festivals and events comes big amounts of party trash. Dispose of waste properly, and do your part to pickup and make sure trash doesn't end up as litter.

Reuse Decorations. When purchasing decorations try to choose options that you can reuse each year and/or for multiple events. An even better option is to purchase reusable decorations made from recycled materials!
