Hoover's Hometown Days Recap

Another Hoover’s Hometown Days weekend has come and gone, blessed again with great crowds and beautiful weather! Here are some of the highlights:

Youth Hoover-Ball & National Championship Results

The annual Member Picnic was held on the lawn at the C.E. Smith House, located next door to the Hoover Birthplace Cottage. An estimated 250 people attended the picnic, followed by the Life Celebration, featuring Dr. George H. Nash as the keynote speaker.

The Hoover Historian Conference followed the life celebration with four author/historians who presented details of Herbert Hoover’s humanitarian efforts throughout his life. They included George H. Nash, Mary Elisabeth Cox, Bertrand M. Patenaude, and Hal Wert. Each speaker highlighted a different time span in great detail. An estimated 180 filled Figge Auditorium throughout the afternoon for the presentations. The event was videotaped by the C-SPAN network and will air at a later date.

Qualified Charitable Distributions

The Charitable IRA Rollover allows individuals age 70½ and older to make direct transfers of up to $100,000 per year (and up to $200,000 per year for married couples) from individual retirement accounts to qualified charities without having to count the transfers as income for federal tax purposes.

Since no tax is incurred on the withdrawal, gifts do not qualify for an income tax charitable deduction, but are eligible to be counted toward an individual’s minimum required distribution.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Remembered Sept. 1  

The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library-Museum houses the Rose Wilder Lane Papers, which document her extraordinary life as a journalist and an author, and reveal the important role she played in her later years formulating and promoting Libertarian ideas. Lane was also an early biographer of Herbert Hoover — she published  The Making of Herbert Hoover  in 1920.

On Sunday, Sept. 1 from 2 to 3 p.m., the Hoover Presidential Library will celebrate the life and times of Laura Ingalls Wilder with a special program by Sarah. S. Uthoff.

An old-fashioned Quilting Bee will be held in the museum lobby prior to the program. They have collected 12 inch Bear Paw quilt blocks which will be assembled into a quilt top.

Deb Pieti is a graphic artist that specializes in restoring and colorizing old photos. Recently, she's been working with archivist Craig Wright to retouch, restore and colorize some of the Rose Wilder Lane images on file in the Hoover Archives. Laura Elizabeth Ingalls Wilder

Laura Elizabeth Ingalls was born to Charles Phillip and Caroline Quiner Ingalls (we commonly refer to them today as Pa and Ma) on February 7, 1867 in a log cabin in Pepin, Wisconsin. In “Little House in the Big Woods”, her first book in a series of children’s books, Laura began writing at the age of 64, Laura discusses her early memories. The series of books discusses her childhood with her family as both a settler and pioneer.

Happy 145 ^th Birthday Mr. President!

The week leading up to Aug. 10, Herbert Hoover’s birthday, we sought 31 people (Hoover was the 31 ^st President) who would join the Foundation in celebrating Hoover’s 145 ^th birthday with a gift of $145. We had an option to make that gift in easy monthly installments of $12.08 each. As Hoover’s gift to you, we offered a commemorative first day of issue Hoover Dollar Coin to everyone who joined the celebration.

We’re pleased to report we’ll be sending out over a dozen coins and raised over $2,000 in the email campaign! If you missed our messages or would like to make a gift today, just click the button below.
