The Rowland High School Skills USA team achieved great success at the recent Virtual Region 03 Leadership and Skills Conference. Out of the 42 contestants who completed it, an impressive 21 students earned an invitation to the State competition, making this the largest and most successful group of winners yet.

The SkillsUSA Championships are career competition events showcasing the best career and technical education students in the nation. Of the 21 Rowland High School students that competed, 15 medaled in various categories, showcasing their outstanding skills and expertise. Collin Chen won Gold for Computer Programming, while sisters Wan Ling Lin and Yunzhi Lin took home Gold for Mobile Robotics Technology. David Yang, Ethan Tovar, and Lucas Mikhail were awarded Silver for Automated Manufacturing Technology, while Matthew Manco received Silver for Automotive Service Technology. Orion Chen won Silver for Computer Programming. Noah Cruz and Joshua Narciso received Bronze for Additive Manufacturing, and Eason Liu and Anthony Tan received Bronze for Mobile Robotics Technology. Matthew Chang won Bronze for Technical Design, Tim Xi won Bronze for Technical Drafting, and Ruby Wu won Bronze for Architectural Drafting.

Students Mark Fernandez, Mia Graciano and Katie Gomez competed and won for Engineering Design Technology. "The contest was to solve a problem. I proposed the idea of a prosthetic leg and then my team mates Mark and Mia proposed that it be adjustable. We made it where the length and height could be customized, as well as the width of the thigh," said Gomez, who plans to study mechanical engineering at UCLA or UC Santa Barbara. Graciano (pictured above) is planning to attend MT. SAC and wants to be an imagineer at Disneyland.

"It took a month to research and then two weeks to design the limb. We needed to demonstrate our innovation. Now we have to improve upon our design, how to make it more comfortable and functional and then present our design to a panel of judges," said Fernandez, who applied to Seattle University for Computer Hardware Engineering and also Cal Poly Pomona.

“We are incredibly proud of our students for their hard work and dedication to achieving success in this competition. Their achievements demonstrate the exceptional skills and talents that they possess, and we are confident that they will continue to excel in the State competition. The team is eager to continue its winning streak and showcase its skills again,” said Michael Frausto, CTE Teacher for Architecture-Construction-Design-Engineering.

Congratulations to Sophia Shen, Margret Tang, and Angel Cheng at Shelyn Elementary as they participated in the “Fall Academic Competitions” hosted by Southern California Council of Chinese Schools (SCCCS) and got extraordinary results. Sophia Shen, a third grader from the Mandarin Dual Immersion program, won both the Chinese Poster Contest and Chinese Pencil Writing Contest, first and sixth place at Elementary Level. Both Margret Tang from fourth grade and Angel Cheng from six grade also won Honorable Mention in the Chinese Poster Contest at Intermediate Level.

According to Kevin Chou, Shelyn’s Mandarin TOSA, 280 participants attended this Chinese Pencil Writing contest, and there were 81 participants in the Elementary Level. "As a first-time participant, it’s not an easy task for Sophia to do," said Chou. "Chinese Pencil Writing requires students to have legible and nice penmanship to write designated Chinese characters within a given amount of time like Chinese calligraphy, and yet she got sixth place. We are so proud of her."

This year, SCCCS also hosted a Chinese Poster Contest for which the theme was a salute to our community heroes. Shelyn Elementary had 14 third to sixth grade students participate in the contest. Sophia Shen also won first place in the Elementary Level, and both Margret Tang (fourth grade) and Angel Zhang (sixth grade) won Honorable Mention in the Intermediate Level. There were a total of 107 participants in the Chinese Poster contest -- 39 participants in the Elementary Level and 31 participants in the Intermediate Level. All three girls were invited to attend the award ceremony that took place on at the Culture Center of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles at El Monte. We are so proud of all of our sharks!
