SJGC is launching a new biweekly newsletter to bring you the latest news featuring the outstanding accomplishments of faculty, students and alumni.


In our first edition, we're highlighting Dr. Valerie White's experience with the Dow Jones News Fund Multimedia Training Academy, Journey Magazine's latest award-winning reporting, and two exciting upcoming events, including SJGC's 40th Anniversary Reception.

Dr. Valerie White Completes Dow Jones News Fund Multimedia Training Academy

Dr. Valerie White completed the Dow Jones News Fund Multimedia Training Academy, held at the University of Texas-El Paso. As one of nine faculty fellows from HBCUs or Hispanic-serving institutions, she worked on the Economic Development along the Mission Trail team. The boot-camp style training is designed to refresh digital media skills of journalism educators as they report on stories local to the El Paso community.

Abraiya Ruffin Is 'Head of the Class' With NBCU Academy

Ruffin was selected to write a feature article for Head of the Class. ‘Head of the Class’ highlights original reporting and video from student journalists, in collaboration with NBCU Academy. Her story highlights SJGC alumnus, Elijah Rutland, and his mural for the Xfinity HBCU tour.


SJGC is a partner school with NBCU Academy, a journalism training and development program designed to prepare college students for a career in the news and media technology industry and to help professional journalists gain new skills.

Journey Magazine Earns Two Awards at 2022 SPJ Sunshine State Awards

Florida A&M University’s School of Journalism and Graphic Communication’s student-led publication, Journey Magazine, won awards in two categories during the 2022 SPJ Sunshine State Awards. "Tally 19: The Enduring Trauma of Revolutionand "Florida College Students Wary of In-Person Instruction Amid Omicron Surge" earned third place for Best Serious Feature and Best COVID-19 Coverage, respectively.

J-School Grad Donovan Long Wins Michigan “Best Anchor” Emmy

Long walked the Michigan Regional Emmy Awards stage and accepted the coveted Best Anchor prize. Long won for his work as the daybreak anchor at Wood-TV in Grand Rapids, MI.

Alumna Monica G. Myrick Wins 2022 Webby Award for Documentary

Myrick won a 2022 Webby Award for her documentary “Walk With Me”. Myrick accepted the award at the 26th Annual Webby Awards in New York.

FAMU SJGC 40th Anniversary Reception


The School of Journalism & Graphic Communication at Florida A&M University was the first Historically Black College or University program to receive accreditation. This year we celebrate 40 years of this distinction, accomplishments and legacy.

NBCU Academy Next Level Summit


NBCU Academy will host its second Next Level Summit on October 18, 2022, from 10 a.m. ET — 2:15 p.m. ET. Throughout the day, this virtual event will combine headlining sessions and breakout industry chats featuring NBCUniversal talent from both on-screen and behind the camera. Our executives and other industry leaders will also offer their insights on a variety of topics focusing on technology and innovation in media and the career paths available in this space.
