Professor Jones' Film Now on Amazon


SJGC professor Kenneth Jones' third film, "My Music," has been acquired by Amazon's movie streaming platform.


"My Movie" details the troubles of 16-year-old Ruth as she pursues her dreams of becoming singer, while also being the caregiver of her aunt who has Alzheimer's. Jones' calls the film a "love letter to caregivers" in an interview with WFSU.

Professor Hunter Presents at Colorado State University


Dr. Leah Hunter presented on a panel discussion at Colorado State University on October 7. Her presentation focuses on the effects of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger on CNN. CEO Chris Licht is shifting the network away from advocacy journalism and towards “objective” journalism. Hunter explores if an objective 24 news network could be successful is the current political environment.


The other presenters spoke on different ideas connected to objectivity, and the adjustments scholars and professors should make in relation to educating students.

Professor Huang Authors New Journal in Health Communications


SJGC Professor Dr. Hsuan Huang was recently published in Health Communication journal. Her paper entitled "Third- and First-Person Effects of COVID News in HBCU Students’ Risk Perception and Behavioral Intention: Social Desirability, Social Distance, and Social Identity" was also listed in the top 25% of articles at the time of publication.

Professor Johnson Featured in Tallahassee Democrat, WCTV


Maurice Johnson was featured two times this fall semester in Tallahassee Democrat and WCTV for his expertise on Hip-Hop culture and mass media. His recent interview with WCTV details the cultural significance of the shooting death of Migos rapper, Takeoff.


Johnson's two front page appearances on the Tallahassee Democrat detailed the academic value of hip hop culture and the legacy of FAMU's homecoming traditions.

Jalynn McDuffey Featured on Good Morning America


Sophomore broadcast journalism student Jalynn McDuffey appeared on Good Morning America's segment about FAMU's homecoming traditions and celebrations. McDuffey showcased her artistic talents on-air and explained why portraiture is her preferred painting style.


"Within the Black experience is the Black person," she said. "I wanted my piece to feature and focus on students because it's the students who bring FAMU to life."


McDuffey is also a recipient of the Gucci North America Changemakers Impact Fund & Scholars Program Scholarship.

Adobe Features SJGC Students, Faculty in Adobe Creative Campus Promotion


FAMU is the second HBCU and second public university in the state to be named as an Adobe Creative Campus.


The computer software company's digital media literacy initiative provides Adobe Creative Cloud programs to all FAMU students. Adobe featured two SJGC students and one alumnus in its profile series about the impact Adobe's resources have made on their career journeys. Senior graphic design students Kah'Milah Ledgester and Ahmad Kebe were highlighted for the series, along with Elijah Rutland, a 2021 SJGC graphic design graduate.

Robert Tucker Joins Student Newsroom at 2022 ONA Conference


Robert Tucker was accepted as a reporter in the Online News Association's student newsroom as part of this year's ONA22 Conference in Los Angeles. Tucker is a senior broadcast journalism student here at SJGC.


Students gain hands on experience in digital media best practices by reporting on and during the ONA conference. Each of the 20 selected students receive produce content for the student newsroom website under the mentorship of professional journalists and digital media experts.

90.5 Turns Up the Music for World College Radio Day


SJGC's WANM 90.5 took to "The Set" in collaboration with the Efferson Student Union for a campus-wide celebration of World College Radio Day.


Joining a college radio station provides students an outlet to sharpen concise storytelling skills. "We're able to give a story in a direct manner, provide opinions and engage our audience through news, sports, talk, entertainment and music," says WANM 90.5 General Manager Terrence Ward.


Recognized on the first Friday in October, World College Radio Day is an annual event that focuses on the significance of collegiate radio stations. The 90.5 staff incorporated their radio programming into a variety of giveaways, games like "Finish that Song," meet and greet opportunities with on-air personalities and more.

Disney Awards SJGC $1M Grant, Internships


The Walt Disney Company is partnering with the FAMU School of Journalism & Graphic Communication to provide scholarship opportunities and work experiences through The Disney Storytellers Fund at FAMU.

Each year, scholars will receive a $10k tuition and housing scholarship and $1,375 stipend.

SJGC Alumna Alea Mexile Joins NBCU Page Program


Aléa Mexile, a spring 2022 broadcast journalism graduate has taken her media talents to New York through the NBC Page Program. Pages (program participants) gain exposure to the core business functions of NBCUniversal through rotational assignments and mentorship opportunities. The NBC Page Program is known as being the premier early career development experience in media industry.

SJGC Alumni Sean Sanders and Jakeira Gilbert Produce Good Morning America Segment


SJGC alumni Sean Sanders and Jakeira Gilbert played integral roles in Good Morning America's homecoming broadcast as producers.


Sanders is a spring 2017 broadcast journalism graduate and now works as a producer with the national news morning show. Gilbert, a 2019 broadcast journalism graduate also works at Good Morning America as a production assistant.

SJGC Alumnus Jarell Baker Wins First Emmy


Jarell Baker was awarded his first Emmy in the inaugural Diversity, Equity and Inclusion category for “Uncovering Our History" at the 2022 Regional Lone Star Emmy Chapter Award Ceremony in Texas. Baker serves as the weekend anchor for KXXV, 25 News.



He is a 2013 graphic design graduate from SJGC.
