April is Citizen Science Month!
Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday with
2.50 Million Acts of Science.
Each April, Citizen Science Month celebrates the people, projects, and scientific outcomes made possible through public participation. SciStarter invites everyone to contribute to 2.50 Million Acts of Science. SciStarter, a global citizen science organization based in Philadelphia and a partner with the Philadelphia STEM Ecosystem, invites everyone to join a worldwide celebration that encourages everyone, everywhere, to participate in real scientific research. Acts of Science can be simple, quick, and meaningful including sharing nature observations, helping scientists sort images online, or transcribing historic documents from a library or from home. There are several flexible ways to get involved:
Organizations that participate will be recognized as part of a citywide and national effort highlighting Philadelphia’s leadership in STEM engagement, civic participation, and lifelong learning. No prior experience is needed. Every contribution counts!

Education for Sustainability Workgroup Social:
Penn Materials Library
On February 18th, the Education for Sustainability (EfS) Workgroup visited Penn’s Fischer Fine Arts Materials Library. The Materials Library is a collection of around 10,000 material samples that is open to all students, academics, designers, material scientists, and engineers. Participants were led through a hands-on exploration of sustainable materials like milk waste fiber (made into a t-shirt - so soft!), reclaimed drywall bricks, and mycelium packaging, while also learning about their production and the sustainability challenges each plays a role in solving. One standout example was the Pennsylvania Flax Project’s Square Yard Initiative. Through this program, participants receive enough flax seeds—at no cost—to plant a one-square-yard plot, yielding sufficient fiber to produce a small textile. This initiative offers a tangible, hands-on way to explore sustainable materials, making it an engaging and accessible learning experience for schools and campuses.
The EFS Workgroup is a collaboration between PHENND Sustainability and the Philadelphia STEM Ecosystem. If you would like to join us, register HERE and stay tuned for details about our next social, which will take place at the PowerCorps Wood Reclamation space. For more information contact PHENND Sustainability Manager Lane Frazee.
