Happy New Year!
Welcome 2026!
Over the past couple weeks, I hope each of you had time to decompress and enjoy meaningful moments with those close to you. I was grateful for the opportunity to spend time with friends, while also relaxing with my immediate family. I’m looking forward to jumping into the new year and continuing our collective work to strengthen STEM education and experiences for Philadelphia’s youth.
It’s Here! The Compass Pro Bono Project Is Underway
As I’ve mentioned over the past few months, we’re partnering with Compass Pro Bono to take a deeper look at the McKinney Center’s work and how we can better align our efforts with the needs of Philadelphia’s STEM community. However, we can’t do this work alone—we really need your input and ideas.
While we put the finishing touches on our feedback surveys, we’d love to invite members to take part in a short focus group. We’re offering three different dates with time options we hope will fit your schedule. If you’re interested, please use this LINK to sign up. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out.
Please keep an eye out for our finalized surveys coming your way over the next few weeks. Your input and participation will play an important role in moving our work forward.
Wishing you a wonderful start to 2026,
David S. Garbe, PhD (he/him)
Director
McKinney Center for STEM Education

Philadelphia STEM Education Directory Wins Product of the Year
| | | |
The Philadelphia STEM Ecosystem is
proud to announce that our
Philadelphia STEM Education Directory
was named the 2025 Technical.ly Award's
Product of the Year!
This Philadelphia STEM Program Directory is a free, searchable map that highlights a wide range of in-person, out-of-school-time STEM opportunities across the Greater Philadelphia area. Students can search for programs based on their interests—from sports analytics and artificial intelligence to marine science and engineering—as well as by grade level (pre-K through 12th grade) and when and where programs are offered. For teachers and educators, the Directory also includes a Professional Development section that can be filtered by interests, grade level, incentives, and aligned educational standards.
We would like to congratulate the other winners of the 2025 Technical.ly Awards: SaaS and Tech Growth Meetup for Programming of the Year; Meredith Tretiak for Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year; Robert Christmas for Thought Leader of the Year; HiveBio Accelerator for Power Move of the Year; and Proscia for Money Move of the Year. It is an honor to be in such great company!
We’re excited to connect our community to even more in-person STEM programs that offer out-of-school-time opportunities for students from PreK through high school. These programs provide valuable hands-on learning experiences, and we want to ensure that students and families know about all the opportunities Philadelphia has to offer. We’re continually updating the Directory with new programs and are committed to keeping it current and useful. Using the Directory—and registering a program—is completely free. If you have a STEM program that should be in the Directory, please visit our page at https://www.philastemeco.org/directory for more information on how to register. If you have any questions, please contact Betsy Payne.
