Apple Picking at Libby's Orchard

Wednesday, September 8

Wednesday is Senior Day at Libby’s. This is the Orchard we like to visit because it’s very senior-friendly. You will be taken by golf cart to the exact spot you want to pick from. This makes for very minimal walking while picking. The fresh fruit picked from trees and bushes, the fresh baked goods from the on-site bakery are all good reasons this is one of our favorite trips on a beautiful fall day. We will make a stop for lunch at the Peppermill Restaurant. Lunch is on your own.

Depart: 10:30 am      Return: 3:30 pm     Fee: $10

The Mount Washington Cog Railway Foliage Trip

Wednesday, Oct 13

Train.png

This 3-hour train ride will bring us to the top of Mount Washington, which is the highest summit in the northeastern US. The railway is the world’s first mountain-climbing cog railway and was invented and built by New Hampshire native Sylvester Marsh, opening in 1869.

“The Second Greatest Show on Earth!” That’s what showman P.T. Barnum proclaimed in 1869 as he stepped down off the train and marveled at the view from Mount Washington’s rocky summit. High praise indeed from the man whose grand circus occupied the primary spot.

There will be limited facilities available at our layover stop. It will depend on the weather as to which station the train will choose.

For Lunch: On the way, we will stop at Subway in No. Conway to pick up a sandwich for lunch, that we can eat while on the train.

Lunch is on your own.

Depart: 8:30 am Return: Approx. 4:00 pm Fee: $60

The shopping trip stays concentrated in North Windham.

Stops include:

                      Hannaford                                            Dollar Tree

                      Shaw’s                                                  CVS or other Pharmacies

Post Office                                   Pet Store / Vet (No. Windham area only)

Our regular scheduled shopping day is Thursday, although factors that could require us to adjust this may include: inclement weather, transportation conflicts with Parks & Recreation programs, or driver availability. To the best of our ability, we will try to let participants know of any schedule change as far in advance as possible.

  * We are not able to accommodate individual appointments for services other than shopping. Since we never know in advance how many passengers we have for the day, your pickup time could also vary each week.

* Participants will be required to call in and reserve their spot between Monday—Wednesday of each week. The route will vary from week to week. You will receive a phone call with your pick-up time Wednesday afternoon. The time that you may have to remain at a given store may vary slightly each week based upon the number of participants involved.

                                                       Some Recommendations:

· If you have prescriptions to fill, call ahead to have the prescription ready for pick up using the drive-

thru window.

· If you have a question about the possibility of a stop out of the normal destinations or have a special request, please call the Parks & Rec Office 892-1905.

Would you like to be a more active participant in the Windham Parks & Recreation Senior activities and programs but your current financial situation prohibits your participation?

Windham’s General Assistance is here to help.

Senior Voucher Program

Windham residents ages 55+ are eligible for funding based on income and need. To maximize the number of seniors we can assist, partial subsidy vouchers will be awarded for 50% or 75% off the program fee. The fee will be adjusted at the time of registration.

To be eligible for this ongoing scholarship program, you must complete an application and meet with Windham Social Services to be approved. Applying does not guarantee that you will be awarded financial assistance; however, if you are awarded financial assistance, it will apply for a full year for participation in any Windham Parks and Recreation senior trips or activities.

To complete your application, you will need to schedule a meeting with Windham Social Services by calling 892-1906. If you have no means of transportation, this interview can be an ADA phone interview with the General Assistance Manager, Rene Daniels. You will need to bring with you:

  • Proof of residency (utility bill or lease or mortgage statement)
  • Proof of Income (Avesta Housing residents automatically qualify, so you’ll only have to indicate the Avesta Housing Complex in which you reside.)

Application and more information may be found online at windhamrecreation.com, you may pick one up in the Parks & Recreation office, or you may call us at 892-1905 and we will mail one to you.
