Tri-State Regional Clean Energy Economy
The 42 counties that make up the Tri-State Development region all contribute to the clean energy workforce and economy.
Our region is home to 5,510 clean energy jobs. Of those, 2,196 are located in our 14 Illinois counties—1.6% of the state’s total. Our Iowa counties account for 2,209 jobs, representing 6.8% of Iowa’s clean energy workforce. In Missouri, our counties contribute 1,105 clean energy jobs, or 1.9% of the state total.
| |
Within each set of the 14 Tri-State counties per state, the leaders in clean energy employment are Adams County, Illinois with 868 jobs, Lee County, Iowa with 446 jobs, and Audrain County, Missouri with 228 jobs.
Of the various sectors making up clean energy jobs, Energy Efficiency is the dominant sector throughout Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri. Workers in the energy efficiency sector are involved in a wide range of activities, including producing ENERGY STAR-certified appliances, installing energy-saving lighting, setting up high-efficiency HVAC systems such as heat pumps, and building homes and commercial structures with innovative materials like low-carbon concrete.
| | | |
Renewable Energy, especially wind and solar, is a very strong sector in Illinois and Iowa.
Within our Tri-State region, 26 wind and solar projects are contributing to clean energy job growth, 30% of which became operational in 2024.
Illinois leads our Tri-State region in clean transportation employment, with 15,881 jobs. Workers in this sector are involved in areas such as electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid EVs, plug-in hybrids, and hydrogen or fuel cell vehicles.

Grant Funding Opportunities
We heard you!
Through the stakeholder survey, one message came through loud and clear—there’s a strong interest in having Tri-State Development highlight grant opportunities. So, we’re taking action. This is our first step in providing targeted grant information we believe will be most relevant and beneficial to our stakeholders. While we can’t cover every opportunity out there, we’re committed to sharing the ones that align most with the needs of our communities. Your feedback is shaping how we serve the region, and we’re excited to see where this leads!
