TRI-STATE DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
|
Tri-State Developed introduced a new internship opportunity for regional college students this fall. Senior Business major, Lexie McClure, and Junior Political Science/History major Jake Effler were part of the inaugural cohort. The 12-week internship provided Lexie and Jake with a number of opportunities to attend task force meetings and meet with regional economic development professionals, community corporate leaders, and elected officials to learn how communities support and grow their economies, make strategic decisions, and add economic value to the region. Thank you to our regional partners who provided insightful educational experiences throughout the internship including Bryan Nichols (Congressman Sam Graves office), Kyle Moore (GREDF), Todd Ahrens and Wendy Harrington (Hannibal Regional), Allie Bennett (Northeast Power) and Ralph Martin (Lewis County Industrial Development and Port Authority).
Tri-State Development is currently accepting applications from regional college students to take part in this unique internship for the spring 2024 semester. To be eligible, students must be a full-time college student enrolled at a higher ed institution in the 36-county Tri-State Development region. Applications are due by December 1, 2023. (Students do not have to be enrolled at Culver-Stockton College to participate. Tri-State Development will work with higher ed partners to ensure that the internship fulfills requirements).

INSIGHT INTO THE TRI-STATE REGION: Population Age
|
|
SOURCE: Ruralhealthinfo.org
|
|
One measure of a healthy community poised for growth is the median age of the workforce, typically defined as those between the ages of 15 and 64. A workforce that, on average, falls toward the younger end of the scale can be an indicator that young professionals are staying in their community, or moving in from elsewhere.
INSIGHTS:
- The median age in the U.S. is 38.6 years in metro areas and 41.8 years in non-metro areas.
- The median age in Illinois is 38.6 (metro) and 42.5 (non-metro). There are 5 of Tri-State's 14 Illinois counties that have a median age that is older than the Illinois average.
- With an average median age of 41.8 in non-metro areas, Iowa is right on target with the national average. In southeast Iowa's 8 Tri-State counties, 5 of them have median ages older than the state and national average.
- In Missouri non-metro areas, the median age is 41.1, a few months younger than the national average. Of Missouri's Tri-State counties, 6 of them have median ages higher than the state and national averages.
- All together, the 36-counties of the Tri-State region boast a median age of 41.5, which gives us a .3 youthfulness advantage over the national average.
- Clearly, the fountain of youth is located in Adair County, MO! Or, perhaps the student population at Truman State University is impacting the median age reported. Regardless, the median age in Adair County, MO is reported well below the average.
- The change in population demographics across the U.S. between 2011 and 2021 illustrates the trends that we have been discussing. The median age in metro and non-metro areas is climbing. Illustrated in the chart below, the percentage of the population over the age of 65 has increased, and the percentage of the population under the age of 25 has decreased. The impact of this trend is a shrinking workforce that can affect patterns of work and retirement, how families function, and the ability of governments to provide resources. (source: NIH.gov)
As we focus on the ways that our region can support and encourage economic growth, we will dig deeper into the activities, policies, and programs that are working, such as innovation, entrepreneurship, and placemaking strategies that keep and attract young professionals.
