IMPORTANT: GIFT CARD PHISHING SCAM, BEWARE!

You may receive an email that looks like it comes from one of your coworkers, saying something like: "Can you do me a favor?"

If you reply, the next email asks you to purchase a gift card on their behalf. The message may say they need the card immediately, but they are too busy to do it, and they will pay you back as soon as possible.

These emails are not legitimate. They are being sent by malicious entities who are impersonating people in your contacts list to gain your trust and exploit you. These kinds of fraudulent emails, known as "phishing", attempt to gain your trust to access your personal and/or credit card information, or to get money (in the form of gift cards).

DO NOT click any links or reply to such messages. Delete these emails immediately!

What to do next:
If you believe you have received this type of phishing email:
1. Contact the person whose name appears in the email (not by replying) to find out if the request is valid. Make sure the email address in the “To” field looks like nameofperson@miu.edu or nameofperson@mum.edu
Nameofperson refers to the contact who is purportedly sending the message.
2. If not, they should notify their colleagues to be on the lookout for fraudulent emails from them.
3. Contact helpdesk@miu.edu immediately to report the phishing attempt
4. If you suspect your account may have been compromised, contact the IT Helpdesk immediately at 641-472-1170.

Health and Wellness
When the sun lingers longer, the ground thaws and new growth starts to appear, this signals Spring, Kapha season — the time of year when we are slowly coming out of our winter hibernation.
As plants wake up, those of us who are sensitive to allergens might feel the effects of heavy Kapha dosha in the sinus and respiratory systems. Responsible for strength, stamina, and a healthy robust physiology, Kapha has great qualities. During Kapha season we have the opportunity to build a strong, healthy immunity.

If you are feeling sluggish here are a few Ayurvedic tips to get the most of this time of year:
  • Get to bed early tonight, during the heavier Kapha time of the evening, which ends around 10:00 p.m. Sleeping during the Kapha time of the night can help you get a jump on the next day, before Kapha time rolls around again when the sun rises. Generally, Kapha time is from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., but varies from region to region.
  • In the morning, warm some purified water and add a spoonful of raw honey and fresh lemon to flush toxins that your body processed while you were sleeping. (Note: Make sure the water is lukewarm and drinkable before adding honey as Ayurveda does not recommend consuming honey that has been heated.)
  • Digestion may naturally be weaker during the Kapha time of the day, especially during Kapha season. Aim to eat your main meal of the day at lunch, when your digestive fire is naturally at its peak. Increase your digestive fire by eating a fresh slice of ginger, or a small amount of ground fresh ginger, with a pinch of salt and a few drops of lemon juice, about ten minutes before a meal.
  • Get moving with daily exercise. Take a short walk outside or practice a few Yoga sun salutations at home to refresh your body and mind and keep you motivated.

Brain Integration: The Secret to Success | 51:31

A discussion with neuroscientist Frederick Travis, Ph.D.
Frederick Travis, Ph.D., is the co-author of World-Class Brain: The Edge That Helps Peak Performers Succeed, and How You Can Develop It. He is also the author of three other books, including Excellence through Mind-Brain Development: The Secrets of World-Class Performers.

Dr. Travis is the Director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition at Maharishi International University (MIU) and the Dean of MIU’s Graduate School.

Dr. Travis describes how high levels of brain integration lead to more accurate analysis of the environment and, therefore, more effective decision-making and behavior. He discusses his research that shows how specific characteristics of brain integration underlie the success of world-class performers. He also talks about how these characteristics of brain integration increase in regular practitioners of the TM technique.

Mario Orsatti, the host of TM Talks and Executive Director of the Center for Health and Wellness, a division of the David Lynch Foundation, interviewed Dr. Travis on February 21, 2021.

David Lynch’s Industrious Pandemic

February 21, 2021

This may be Lynch’s most uncanny talent: an ability to plug into the socket of our collective unconscious, generating sparks that light up the dark of our waking lives, offering glimpses of the great unknown we carry within.
Maybe this is a soul; maybe it’s a sense of what lies beyond. Lynch refers to it as “pure consciousness,” a “treasury” that he said is available to all of us, and something he accesses daily through Transcendental Meditation. Lynch began sitting for two twenty-minute sessions a day, every day, more than forty-seven years ago.“No matter how busy I’ve been,” he said, “I’ve never missed a meditation.” He called T.M. “the key to everything,” a pursuit that unlocks “unbounded intelligence, unbounded creativity, unbounded happiness, unbounded energy, unbounded love, unbounded power, unbounded peace. It’s like going to the bank vault and bringing out bars of gold, and then taking them home and stacking them in your closet.” He added, “And it never goes away! You can even start enjoying very strange things that used to drive you nuts before. And things get more like a game than a torment.”

In 2005, he formed the David Lynch Foundation to help spread awareness of T.M.’s transformative efficacy and to bring instructional training to schools, prisons, homeless shelters, and victims of domestic abuse. Lynch seems almost pained that more people have not found their way to the practice. (He’d just watched Judd Apatow’s “The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling” and came away with the feeling that, if Shandling “had only been able to transcend every day,” he wouldn’t have been so tortured.) “Built into all of us,” Lynch said, “is a yearning to be totally, one-hundred-per-cent free. And it’s this yearning that eventually gets us on a spiritual path and headed toward enlightenment.”

I asked Lynch where he places himself along that path. “Well, I’m not at the goal,” he said, with disarming, childlike openness, “but, relatively speaking, I’m what you could call a happy camper.” When I wondered what sorts of things were making him happy these days, he dispatched some gentle spiritual comeuppance. “There are things that make us happy, but the real happiness is not something that you make out there—it’s something that you gather from the inside.” His sense is that much of the awfulness we’re seeing in the world right now is karmic payback for a long run of bad human behavior, but is certain that “the world is heading toward something not good but great. We just need to get to the other side of this shakeup.”

20 beautiful quotes on mindfulness and meditation

Meditation is effective in eliminating stress, anxiety, tension, worries and relaxing your mind as well as the soul. Meditation is a very healthy practice that requires a few minutes to restore your calm and inner peace. Meditation can be practised at any age, place, and is inexpensive. It's a simple and effective process that had been done by rishis for ages. The best part is that it can be practised anywhere; like when you are sitting in a car, riding the bus, waiting for a friend or at the office.

Meditation is the direct means of enjoying the greatest happiness and is the only means to quench the thirst for happiness on earth—Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
