Congresswoman Miller-Meeks Set to Tour MEG’Array Solar Power
Discuss Future of Solar in Iowa
Date: September 8, 2021
Time: 3:00 PM CDT
Location: MEG’Array Solar Power Plant
|
|
Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks to join Power Up Iowa in touring the MEG’Array Solar Power Plant and to discuss the rapidly growing future of solar power in Iowa.
FAIRFIELD, IA – Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R – IA02), an avid supporter of renewable energy and its benefits for Iowa, is scheduled to join representatives of Power Up Iowa for a tour of the Maharishi International University’s MEG’Array Solar Power Plant in Fairfield, Iowa. Iowa has long been known as a national leader for wind energy. However, solar capacity is rapidly increasing in the state. Projects like that found at Maharishi International University can set an example for solar development in Iowa going forward.
When developed, the MEG’Array Solar Power Plant was Iowa’s first solar power and battery storage project. This state-of-the-art solar project produces 1.1 million watts of clean energy annually and powers roughly 43 percent of the university’s operations. Advanced tracking and storage technologies have let the project produce enough affordable energy to reduce Maharishi International University’s utility costs by 30 percent.
The event will begin with an overview of Maharishi International University and Ideal Energy before touring the solar farm. The renewable energy roundtable discussion with Congresswoman Miller-Meeks and other attending stakeholders will then occur at the university. The event will conclude with a press avail and time for questions.
Participants:
- Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks & Staff
- John Hagelin, President, Maharishi International University
- Troy Van Beek, Founder & CEO, Ideal Energy
- Amy Van Beek, CMO, Ideal Energy
- Michael Halley, Fairfield City Councilman and Account Manager for Ideal Energy
- Kelvey Vander Hart, Power Up Iowa
- Claire Simmons, Power Up Iowa

Honoring Our Dear Rae Koch
|
|
Katherine Baker, the daughter of dear Rae Koch, asked me to let Rae’s friends know that on August 9th, at the age of 99, she departed from this world.
Rae was, with her husband Dr. Walter Koch, a founder of Maharishi’s organization in the United States.
She and Walter learned the Transcendental Meditation technique in 1960 after attending an introductory lecture by Maharishi at the Santa Barbara public library.
When Walter arrived in Rishikesh for TTC in 1968, Maharishi asked, “Where is Rae?” He insisted that she come immediately from California to join Walter.
Through the years, she supported Walter in all his many great responsibilities in the organization — in presenting Maharishi’s teaching, running KSCI, administering MIU, etc.
She is very precious to all of us who knew her… truly a great soul and a great lady. I personally admire her so much, and in my visits to her in recent years, she was so gracious and loving, and so fascinating to talk to. She wrote the most beautiful letters, full of refinement, kindness, and support for all the Governors.
There will be a celebration of her life in October that I am sure many who knew her and admired her will like to attend. Her daughter Katherine will let us know the details in due course.
With waves of love and gratitude to dear Rae,
Jai Guru Dev

“It is a very fortunate time on earth--after thousands and thousands of years, that the age-old suffering is going to come to an end by a formula of serving all others through the process of enjoying bliss. It’s such a beautiful formula: Be yourself, in the self-referral dynamics of your own consciousness, and what you create outside is positivity, harmony, order. There can be no greater knowledge than enjoying the waves of bliss, and through the mechanics of enjoying the waves of bliss, engaging the government of nature to work for us, and spontaneously purifying the environment around us. It’s a very beautiful technique we have developed, and all glory goes to the Vedic Masters of our great eternal tradition.”
—Maharishi, Inaugural address to the Group for a Government Assembly, June 1993

Bette Smith: Rock & soul powerhouse hits Rams Head Live
AUGUST 26, 2021
Rock & soul powerhouse Bette Smith is currently on tour promoting her latest album, “The Good, The Bad and the Bette. ”In anticipation of the show, the Baltimore Post-Examiner’s Alex May connected with Bette to talk everything from touring in 2021 to transcendental meditation to chicken & waffles. Read on for a glimpse into the mind of the Brooklyn native, and check back next week for an in-depth review of the show.
|
|
Bette Smith: Well, that’s a good question. I meditate. A couple of years ago, I was interested in meditation. I had heard a song by Stevie Wonder many years ago called [Jesus Children of America] and one of the lyrics was “transcendental meditation speaks of inner preservation”. It’s from his album, “Songs in The Key of Life”, which I’m sure you’re familiar with, Alex.
BPE: Oh, yes.
Bette Smith: And so a little curiosity got planted in me. And I said you know what, let me check out transcendental meditation because I’d been doing yoga for almost 500 classes, but when the pandemic hit, they said, “this is your 500 class anniversary. Congratulations. The studio is now closed down.”
BPE: [laughs]
Bette Smith: I was kind of traumatized, slightly traumatized by that. And I was like, “oh, my God, that’s what I was using to find my center and ground myself. Now, what am I going to do?” So I said, let me start doing this TM. And I went to see, she’s like a guru. Her name is Donna Brooks, and she’s in New York, and we had a couple of Zoom calls and she instructed me how to do the transcendental meditation. So now right before a show. I do at least twenty minutes of transcendental meditation, and I do it every day for two times a day. So it’s been keeping me grounded and it gives me a surge of energy. You can’t do this right before you go to bed. Not that type of meditation. It really takes you to a deeper level of relaxation. So I highly recommend it. I don’t work for the company by the way. [laughs]
BPE: [laughs] Maybe you should!
Bette Smith: I just really love it! Maybe I should. Yeah, that’s true. They have asked me to sing at one of their seminars, so I love them and they love me. We have a really nice thing going on.
BPE: That’s amazing.
Bette Smith: Yeah, it is amazing. And it really saves my energy levels because I totally need a lot. You know, I have to be like Wonder Woman to keep up with the schedule.
BPE: Seriously? Maybe I have to give this a try. Like a man can only drink so many cups of coffee. That’s really cool. Transcendental meditation. I love it. So just a silly question. In between meditation sessions, do you sort of have a comfort meal or comfort food that you reach for when you need to fuel up on tour?

The moment The Beatles met Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
|
|
The Beatles’ time in India was short. Although the group were inspired by the setting and lectures to write a large number of new songs that would eventually find their way onto The White Album and various other releases, the band grew disillusioned with the dedication required. Starr left after only ten days, while McCartney never fully committed to the program and left once business concerns needed attending to. Harrison was fully dedicated to the Maharishi’s teachings, while Lennon saw it as the best available path to spiritual enlightenment. However, the two abruptly left when a rumour began to spread, accusing the Maharishi of inappropriate contact with some of the participants.
The effects that the Maharishi and TM have had on The Beatles varied. Lennon largely renounced the practice and took a greater interest in peace advocacy. Harrison felt regret for the way the band severed their ties with the Maharishi, and upon his conversion to Hinduism, he incorporated many of the teachings and philosophies into his own belief system. Both McCartney and Starr, despite their dislike of the formalities involved in the Maharishi’s program, continue to practice and advocate Transcendental Meditation to this day—and it all started in the ballroom of a swanky London hotel.
