University News for Faculty and Staff
Message from President Hagelin

As our Fall semester comes to a close and many of the students have left for the winter break, I’m thinking about all of you — our dear faculty and staff — and all we’ve accomplished together in the first half of this academic year.

Even with the many challenges that were thrust upon us in 2020, your continuing service has enabled us to deliver consciousness-based education to an ever-widening number of students worldwide. Our overall enrollment today stands at 2,053 students — the highest in our university’s history.

Message from ComPro

Spring applications have risen to record levels, international embassies are starting to reopen, and the outlook for the year ahead looks very promising.

The recent Fall 2020 graduation includes 162 students from 26 nations, including our first Jamaican graduate (Carlton Ellis). So, totals are now: 3206 MSCS graduates from 96 nations since '96!

You can see an interactive world map showing distribution of graduates by country, here.

What a celebration!

Thank you for joining me and our very special guests to launch Meditate America.
Together, we were moved by the stories of healthcare heroes like Laurie Jaffe who have used the Transcendental Meditation® technique to build calm, focus, and resilience.
Together, we learned about the science behind this transformative technique, and its benefits in alleviating symptoms of heart disease, high blood pressure, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and many other health challenges.

I invite you to be a part of this new, national movement by supporting Meditate America. Your gift will help the David Lynch Foundation put in motion all we need to bring meditation to everyone in the country - clinical research, public policy, deploying TM® teachers – that will make TM a widely accessible treatment modality.

Together we can bring the gift of TM to healthcare heroes, veterans, and families suffering from trauma and stress. We know it works. We know its medical and psychological benefits. We know it increases energy, creativity, and clarity. Now is the time to share TM with those who need it most.

And now is the time to give – because you can double your impact! A generous donor has agreed to match new donations to Meditate America, up to a total of $175,000 in matching! But we only have a few weeks to raise the matching funds. Please help the David Lynch Foundation take advantage of this tremendous opportunity by making a tax-deductible donation today!

Good news! A donor has offered to match all new gifts to Meditate America, up to $50,000, before December 31!

This means you DOUBLE your 100% tax-deductible donation if you give now!

Thank you for being part of the Meditate America movement.

To your good health,

Bob Roth
CEO, David Lynch Foundation
Throughout this Season of Giving during the month of December, thanks to your continued support we have raised close to $20,000 towards our annual fund. We set a big goal this year: to raise $50,000 starting with GivingTuesday on December 1 and ending on December 31.

If you've been meaning to make a donation in 2020, now is the time!

Any donation from now until midnight, December 31, will be matched up to $50,000
by two generous donors.

In 2021, we see a very bright future for Maharishi School, and additional funding is needed to help fulfill the following goals.

  • We will continue to create a safe space for our students, offering a choice of online or in-person learning.

  • We will continue to provide the most profound and unique opportunity for personal growth through Consciousness-Based education.

  • We will provide financial aid for all families to enroll their children in Maharishi School, despite our challenging economy.

Thank you for making this, and so much more possible!

With all appreciation and best wishes for a Happy New Year,

Laura Bordow
Development Director

Dr. Robert Boyer Publishes Book on Consciousness and Quantum Theory
Former MIU Professor Robert Boyer’s book on consciousness and quantum theory was recently published by Routledge India. Titled Pointless: The Reality Behind Quantum Theory, the book offers a holistic interpretation of quantum theory, based on recent advances from physics, consciousness studies, and Vedic ScienceSM.

“This book systematically probes deep into the relationship of matter, mind, and consciousness to provide bridging concepts between Maharishi’s re-clarification of ancient Vedic Science and his work with modern science,” said Dr. Boyer.

Robert Boyer earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from UCLA, became a teacher of the Transcendental Meditation® technique, and completed a master’s degree in the Science of Creative Intelligence® at Maharishi European Research University in Switzerland. After earning his doctorate in cognitive psychology at the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Boyer joined MIU as a full-time faculty member, teaching in the psychology and neuroscience programs. During the past 30 years, he has worked in community mental health and private practice as a psychologist in the southeast Iowa area.

Dr. Boyer has been an avid researcher of Maharishi Vedic ScienceSM and has published numerous journal articles. Pointless is his fourth book exploring the consciousness-mind-matter relationship from the perspectives of modern science and Vedic Science.

His second major field of interest and expertise is communication. “The two things most needed are development of consciousness and development of communication skills,” said Dr. Boyer. “Healthy communication is one of the most important tools for good family and work relationships and a key aspect of mental health counseling that is much needed in today’s world.”

Dr. Boyer has also written three books on a systematic approach to communication, which focus on the relationship between heart and mind, drawing from Maharishi’s translation and commentary on the Bhagavad Gita. He now serves as adjunct faculty and consultant with MIU, teaching classes in communication skills. You can find out more about his work on his website at bridgetounity.com.

We have just added two very powerful and transformative Vedic recitations to the Maharishi Veda App — the Yoga Sutras and Brahma Sutras.

These two recitations enliven the development of our consciousness. At this time when diversifying tendencies have generally been prominent, we wanted to share these two especially unifying and harmonizing recitations – highlighted by Maharishi.

Transcendental Meditation® Program
Discover how Transcendental Meditation® leads the way in the healing process of toxic stress, anxiety, trauma, and Post-Traumatic Stress. The latest research shows how the practice of TM® twice a day significantly decreases these conditions and reduces the symptoms of PTSD and depression by approximately 50%

Join Bob Roth, CEO of the David Lynch Foundation, and Shayel Naava as they discuss the role of TM in overcoming emotional abuse and connecting to our natural state of confidence and inner peace.

This interview is part of a FREE 1-day Master Class led by Shayel Naava along with other top experts called “Emotional Abuse to Euphoria: Confident, Peaceful & Healing.”

Learn more about Transcendental Meditation as Bob shares the evidence-based benefits that this practice is offering to people under trauma and stress, including healthcare workers, first responders, veterans, and victims of domestic violence.

TM is an effective technique for awakening the full potential of the mind and body. It facilitates access to that deep calm space within and gives our body a chance to heal allowing us to reclaim who we truly are, instead of living as victims of the past.

We hope you enjoy this rich conversation and have an opportunity to learn more about the many ways TM opens the door to effective and long lasting healing. Moving from trauma into bliss isn’t a far-fetched goal but the most natural process – our purest way of being, and it resides within us at all times.

When to see "Meeting the Beatles in India" film for free until December 31

Paul Saltzman's documentary film: Meeting the Beatles in India DLF and TM have made it available for free on Gathr.com within a 15-day window for a 24-hour period from the time you sign in. The offer goes until the end of the year. It includes the film, followed by interviews, which were very good and revealing. Enjoy this Limited Virtual Theatrical Run, a gift from the David Lynch Foundation and The Transcendental Meditation Organization.
In 1968, with the eyes of the world upon them, The Beatles traveled to Rishikesh, India, to study transcendental meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. In one of the most anticipated Beatles documentaries, Filmmaker Paul Saltzman, retraces his journey of 50 years ago when he spent a life-changing time with John, Paul, George and Ringo. Fifty years later he reveals previously unknown details of this pivotal moment in the Beatles’ career and the inner workings of the masterful White Album.

Fifty years later, he finds “Bungalow Bill” in Hawaii; connects with David Lynch about his own inner journey; as well as preeminent Beatles historian, Mark Lewisohn; Academy Award nominated film composer, Laurence Rosenthal.: and Pattie and Jenny Boyd. And much of this is due to Saltzman’s own daughter, Devyani, reminding him that he had put away and forgotten these remarkably intimate photographs of that time in 1968.

Healing the healers during the pandemic

A very exciting and innovative program has started in the US to help frontline healthcare workers who are suffering from burnout. Heal the Healers Now is the program bringing Transcendental Meditation (TM) to doctors, nurses, and other key hospital workers who have come under great pressure during the pandemic. It is being offered by the TM organization and the David Lynch Foundation in the US.

It has received a hugely enthusiastic welcome from healthcare professionals and from donors who recognize their stressful situation and want to support. 33 Teaching projects are already underway in hospitals and research centers across the US in which over 300 healthcare providers have already learned TM with many more scheduled to learn over the coming weeks. Initial research (not yet published) shows that these key professionals are experiencing huge relief in terms of reduced anxiety after 1 month. Comparable results have been found with depression, insomnia, and general psychological distress.

Dr Stuart Rothenberg, who is the medical director for the program, emphasized the importance for healthcare when these front-line leaders take up Transcendental Meditation for their own benefit, and then want to bring the benefits to all their colleagues and patients.

Tony Williams, founder of the Tony Williams Dance Center and Urban Nutcracker, and founder and artistic director of City Ballet of Boston, discusses the role of dance programs for children in inner cities, shares excerpts from the Urban Nutcracker, and talks about how 50+ years of TM practice have influenced his remarkable life.

Thousands of Indigenous Maasai Now Seeking TM in Villages Across Tanzania
Local Maasai Women Love their TM and are Organizing Huge Courses

Raja Steve Heaton and Mother of the Domain Isabel tell the compelling and moving story of how Transcendental Meditation has helped thousands of Maasai women in Tanzania. Nearly 2% – almost 8,000 of the 430,000 Maasai population have benefited in the last 5 years. Village women leaders have become enthusiastic advocates and organizers for village TM courses in this vast Serengeti and Mt. Kilimanjaro region. Sometimes 80-100 learn every week!

Maasai women love their meditation because it helps them relax after their hard, grueling responsibilities.
•   Most have 4-7 children to care for. And if that's not enough, they maintain the houses they built themselves, tend the cows, goats and other farming chores. And some women trek 5-10 miles every day to get water.
•  With their daily practice of TM, Maasai women enjoy the great boon of happier, healthier days with more energy.

Jerry Seinfeld Says Working Out Helps Keep Him Funny After 30 Years in Comedy
The comedian shared how weights and HIIT are integral to his writing process in a new interview with Tim Ferriss.
BY PHILIP ELLIS DEC 13, 2020
In a recent conversation on The Tim Ferriss Podcast, standup comedian and actor Jerry Seinfeld opened up about his creative process, and revealed that maintaining his physical fitness and mental wellbeing are both important practices that feed into how he approaches writing comedy.

"Exercise, weight training, and transcendental meditation, I think, could solve just about anyone’s life," he told Ferriss. "I don't care what you do, with weight training and transcendental meditation, I think your body needs that stress, that stressor. And I think it builds the resilience of the nervous system, and I think transcendental meditation is the absolutely ultimate work tool. I think the stress reduction is great, but it’s more the energy recovery and the concentration fatigue solution, which is of course, as a standup comic, I can tell you, my entire life is concentration fatigue. Whether it’s writing or performing, my brain and my body, which is the same thing, are constantly hitting the wall. And if you have that in your hip pocket, you're Columbus with a compass."

Bob Roth was invited on Katy Perry's Instagram feed on December 20th. Katy had Zooey Deschenel on first. Then, Katy and Bob shared a great discussion about what TM has done for her these last 10 years.
