Understanding the Climate-Water-Energy-Food Nexus and Streamlining Water-Related Policies

Addressing the strong nexus between water, climate, energy and food is essential to achieve the objectives of the European Green Deal, which aims at making the EU's economy sustainable by turning climate and environmental challenges into opportunities across all policy areas. A climate-water-energy-food nexus will help to address these challenges by exploiting available synergies across all policy areas of the European Green Deal, maximize coherence and promote positive trade-offs between different policies. As a result, the EU’s research and innovation program has supported multiple projects to assess the water-energy-food nexus at various geographical scales and from a systemic point of view.

Solving Shared Problems at the Food, Energy, and Water Nexus

Challenges such as climate change, population growth, and urbanization are disturbing the security and services of food water and energy system at an increasing rate. Therefore, scientists from U.S. and China studied challenges in food, energy and water systems and identified solutions are best achieved through international collaboration. Without strong international collaboration and innovation, there might come an point where environment degradation and ecosystem losses cannot be restored, with severe ramifications for the fast growing populations.

Resilience Meets the Water–Energy–Food Nexus: Mapping the Research Landscape
By: Rick J. Hogeboom, Bas W. Borsje, Mekdelawit M. Deribe, Freek D. van der Meer, Seyedabdolhossein Mehvar, Markus A. Meyer, Gül Özerol, Arjen Y. Hoekstra and Andy D. Nelson

This paper reviewed recent scientific papers dealing with nexus and resilience contexts to examine the status quo of resilience thinking; map the research landscape along with major research foci and conceptualizations; and propose a research agenda, by distilling recommendations and knowledge gaps from the reviewed publications. Results identified five research avenues; (a) improving the understanding of resilience across the WEF nexus; (b) developing tools and indicators to measure and assess the resilience of WEF systems; (c) bridging the implementation gap; (d) integrating resilience and nexus thinking; and (e) considering other development principles and frameworks beside and beyond resilience.
