Water-Energy-Food Nexus in Africa Initiative Hosted 2nd Round of Four Webinar Series in 2021
Water-Energy-Food Nexus in Africa Initiative, in collaboration with FAO, WE4F, GIZ Nexus Dialogues, and SEI successfully hosted four webinar series on year 2021 with the theme focused on "Solutions Using Water-Energy-Food Nexus Approaches". These webinar series were scheduled for dates September 14, October 19, November 16, and December 14, 2021. The first webinar series was focused on disaster resilience and discussed different approaches across Africa to prevent, mitigate and address disaster risk and resilience, specifically through a water-energy-food nexus lens with solutions in mind. The second webinar series presented different approaches for WEF Nexus transboundary cooperation and governance from three different regions: Southern Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean and the Niger Basin. The third webinar series provided insight into the role of photovoltaics in community farming in Gambia and described the models behind existing projects and investment strategies/behaviors within a local framework. Finally, fourth series discussed financing models for Smallholders and other End-users in the WEF-Nexus with special focus on the West Africa Region. WEF Nexus in Africa is planning for more webinar sessions in 2022. Stay tuned.

Why Water Nexus is a Hot Topic?
The need for water is increasing with the increase in water shortage and desertification warnings in several parts of the world. It is expected that water demand will rise by 55% in 2050. It has also been noted that 80% of global wastewater is not adequately treated. Therefore, the circular economy approach of reusing treated wastewater could act as a solution to reduce demand on limited water resources and could benefit several power plants, mills, factories and most importantly provide direct climate benefits. In addition, the treatment of sewage water helps to reduce greenhouse gases too.

How USA can Become Carbon Neutral?
In 2018, the US energy sector consumed around 101.3 quadrillion BTUs of energy, out of which 11% came from renewable energy sources. This necessitates not only the need to increase renewable energy generation capacity, but also retrofit and upgrade existing buildings with proper insulation, windows, walls, energy conscious HVAC systems, and smart energy information systems and also built the new ones following energy efficient regulations. Several policies from local, state, and federal agencies can contribute to make a carbon neutral America.

Lessons Learnt from "The Synthesis of Experiences in Transboundary Basins"
The five take home messages discovered from the synthesis of experiences in transboundary basins include (1) transboundary basins have enough potential to generate benefits across water, food, energy, and ecosystem, (2) these basins can handle water and environment related issues through nexus solutions (3) transboundary cooperation can facilitate the cross- sectoral dialogue needed to develop water infrastructure, (4) highlights the need to understand the inter- sectoral linkages to prioritize key issues and solutions, and (5) three main components for nexus solution and investment are cross cutting regional strategies, river basin plans and financial support from financial institutions.
