This Sunday

Come join us for worship at 11:00 a.m. in English or 1:00 p.m. in Spanish, as in our Gospel reading Jesus treats us to another parable about a vineyard. This one is the parable of the Wicked Tenants, vineyard workers who beat and kill the servants of the vineyard owner and eventually the son of the vineyard owner as well. Jesus tells this parable to chastise the Jewish religious leaders over their failure to recognize and accept Jesus as the fulfillment of the scriptures. But what does this parable mean for us? We are the vineyard tenants now. God has welcomed us into the vineyard, but have we produced good fruit? All this is to be considered Sunday. See you there!

Please Do Not Touch

Someone has been messing with the audio mixing board again. Please refrain from touching the mixer board. The board is “preset”, so when buttons are pushed and slide controls moved, the quality of our audio is degraded dramatically. Please coach your children that “mission control” is out of bounds as a play area. Thank you!

¡Gracias!

Another church family in Need

Most of our AGLC membership is acquainted with Socorro Aragon, and her family. Socorro has been very faithful in setting up our altar on Sunday mornings for years, and in many ways she is the matriarch of the Spanish speaking membership. She usually preaches on the Sundays that Pastor Julie cannot be at the Spanish service. Her husband and son-in-law who had the same employer were recently laid off. Socorro’s daughter, who is active among the Spanish speaking members of our congregation, also is without a job at present. The only member of the household currently receiving a salary is Socorro herself, who works with a couple of families, caring for their children during the day, doing housework and preparing meals. With this household down to one income it is difficult for them to pay the monthly rent and put food on the table. Thus, this appeal goes out to anyone who is in a position to be able to help financially. The hope is that the members of the family who have recently been unemployed will soon find employment again, and the financial situation will stabilize, but in the meantime we have an opportunity to help a family who are among the most actively involved families in our congregation. As before if you wish to contribute a check, please make in payable to Amazing Grace Lutheran Church, and note in the memo line that the contribution is for the Aragon family. Once we have begun to collect assistance one check will be issued to the family by the church. Thank you and Blessings!

The Prayers of the People

The word Liturgy comes from a Greek word that means the work of the people. But the majority of our worship ends up being the work of the pastor or the lay assistant, and the participation of the congregation is mostly passive.         In the earliest church, the congregation took a more active role, but we Lutherans are so reserved we need a script to follow or we won’t open our mouths. This is true of the prayer that comes in the second half of the service. We call it the prayers of the people; and historically, the petitions were not written in advance, but were provided by worshipers, with a spoken response from whole congregation between each petition. But of course, most Lutherans are uncomfortable praying aloud in public.  So today the “Prayers of the People” are prepared in advance, and the congregational response after each petition is the extent of the congregational involvement.

The other thing of significance to note about the Prayers of the People is that the petitions are not just focused on local matters, but expand the concern church-wide and globally. We pray for the church, for the nations, the health of our world, as well as local congregational needs, and those we know and love who are ill and fighting for life. Left to ourselves, we would probably choose to pray for concerns closer to home, but the Prayers of the Church, call us outside of ourselves, to have concerns for people in other nations, and the ministry of the church throughout the world.
