Autoware Foundation demonstrates Autonomous Valet Parking with AS
AutonomouStuff hosted the Autoware Foundation and Apex.AI at its Silicon Valley office in October for the culmination of a community development effort that adds significant new functionality to the Autoware.Auto self-driving software stack: Autonomous Valet Parking (AVP).

As one of the most critical elements of our Open Autonomy Pilot, Autoware gives autonomous driving hardware and software developers a robust system to test innovative ideas and deliver results.

The successful introduction of AVP opens even more opportunities, on top of the capability to send a vehicle off to park itself and then return autonomously — all from the screen of a cellphone.

Development tools to showcase the AVP enhanced functionality included:
  • a Lexus RX450h platform with an AutonomouStuff PACMod 3.0 drive-by-wire system.
  • automotive-grade navigation software.
  • a 3D map of the parking lot to test software in simulation prior to real-world deployment.

With AVP and the tap of a finger, Autoware can now park a vehicle and retrieve it on command! For more details and video of the demonstration, check out the Autoware Foundation blog.

Meet the team: John Hawkins
John Hawkins recently joined the AutonomouStuff team in Morton and is putting two decades of warehousing industry experience to work helping manage our inventory. John said the new position requires a different approach to familiar skills and a fresh perspective. Before joining AS, John also lived in Finland for 11 years, where he taught English, studied languages and edited texts, in addition to raising a son who now lives and works in Scotland.

"Now, dealing with direct inventory, I find it interesting because of how it behaves in the system, requiring a different type of thinking," John said. "In my previous job, our inventory dealt with a lot of outdated machinery, whereas now I'm dealing with cutting edge technology. That's exciting."
