Bertha's Book – As told by Darlene Tolles

In a quiet room at Andy’s House, Darlene sat beside her mother, gently turning the pages of a handmade book. On its cover was Noir, the now retired therapy cat at Hospice Muskoka. The book, lovingly crafted by Darlene, came to be known as Bertha’s Book

Bertha Tolles, Darlene’s mother, was the proud matriarch of a large and loving family—mother of eight, and cherished Grandma and Great Grandma to many. During her final weeks at Andy’s House, Bertha was rarely alone. Visitors came often, sharing laughter, memories, and stories. Wanting to preserve these moments, Darlene encouraged everyone to write in the book. The children especially enjoyed “telling” Great Grandma their news.

In quieter moments, Darlene would read these messages aloud. Sharing the entries became a treasured ritual, a way to bring joy and connection during those final days.

As her obituary read: “Ultimately, a person’s life is not defined by what they may have done, but how they have touched the lives of others. Bertha, with her kindness and compassion, has left an impression in the hearts of her family, friends, and everyone she met along her journey, making our lives so much richer.”

When Bertha passed peacefully at Andy’s House, Darlene laid her ashes to rest with Bertha’s Book beside her. “I told her a few memories to take with her,” she said. At a friend’s suggestion, Darlene had made a copy—ensuring those final words and moments would stay with the family.

The Tolles family expressed their gratitude for the staff at Andy’s House. “We are eternally thankful for the care and support you gave our mother,” said Darlene. “You helped us create comfort, meaning, and peace at the end of her journey.”
