Stewardship Campaign

Did you ever have news that was so exciting that you could not wait to share it with others? The Good News that fills our spirits with joy is about the radical abundance, abiding love, and healing power that Jesus shares with us when we respond to his call to follow him.

We would love to hear your story - your exciting news. If you are willing to share it with us on an upcoming Sunday, please contact Stewardship Chair Deb Hladky, dehladky0426@gmail.com If you prefer to submit something in writing for enews, send it to seniorwarden2024.stjohns@gmail.com Neither oral nor written testimony has to be lengthy.

Today's sharing is from Jackie Hymes.

Good morning, St. John's Family. My name is Jackie Hymes. I am here to tell my story of how God has blessed me through the holy spirit-and loving people here at St. John's over the past 10 years First: I was born and raised in West Virginia. Not much money but our dad made sure we all had at least a quarter to give at Sunday School every Sunday. Growing up, at an early age, It was taught to us 5 kids in my family the importance of giving. Now I have two sons, Tony and David. From the time they were born I made sure we attended Sunday School every Sunday. And made sure they had money to put in for Sunday School. I believed it was something I needed to teach my kids.

There is a funny story. We were living in Ohio at the time and came home to West Virginia. As usual we spent the night at my grandparents’ house. I think Tony was 4 and David was 3 years old. As usual, I gave them Sunday School money. By the time we were ready to go to church, I checked to make sure the boys had their money. David had laid on Grandma's couch. When he got up, I asked about his money. He didn't understand. I got him up and checked all his pockets. No money. But The money rattled. So I shook him, and the money rattled. I thought he had swallowed his money. I got the attention of the whole family because I said he had swallowed his Sunday School money. I called the hospital to see what I should do or could do. If he did not choke, then watch him to be sure he is alright. I got him again and shook him and his money was still rattling. Well, I did a more thorough

look and found his two coins in his shirt pocket.

Telling my story is a way to remind me the blessings I have received from St. John's. My giving is a way to give honor to God and appreciation for our church and its needs.

Then talents. The hugs and love we received from members of the congregation after leading music of the Praise Band on Sundays for several years was honored to us by our loving Savior. You have no idea how spiritually close to our Jesus you at St. John's have

brought me. I thank God for healing prayers. I thank God for friendships and I thank

Jesus that He walks with us every day.

St. John's Thank You!

The Angel Tree

Thank you to everyone who took a tag off the tree on Sunday. Each tag represents a child from a family at Belcher School who will have a better Christmas because of your generosity. Please remember that you don't have to purchase everything on the list. It's just a suggestion. Wrap the gift(s) and return them to church by Dec. 14. Remember to attach the tag that you took from the tree. It is the only way that gifts can be matched to the child.

There are only 3 tags remaining. If you would like to get one, please contact Caroline Barnett.

Vestry at work

Your Vestry was hard at work on Sunday when this photo was taken. Remember that Vestry minutes for the previous month are always posted on the bulletin board in the church entryway. Below is a link to approved minutes from the October meeting.

St. John's Annual Meeting will be held on January 25. At. that time, two Vestry members will conclude their terms. We will have two openings for new members. If you think you may be interested, please talk to me or to any Vestry member.

Advent begins November 30

Advent is the first season of the church year, beginning with the fourth Sunday before Christmas and continuing through the day before Christmas. The name is derived from a Latin word for “coming.” The season is a time of preparation and expectation for the coming celebration of our Lord's nativity.

This year Advent begins on Sunday, November 30, We will begin liturgical Year A and will read the Gospel of Matthew. This past year, Year C, we read Luke.

The Lectionary in the Book of Common Prayer uses a three-year cycle, Years A, B, and C. Year A begins on the First Sunday in Advent in years evenly divisible by three (e.g., 2025 – 2025 divided by 3 is 673!). In the eucharistic lectionary the Gospel according to Matthew is read in Year A, Mark in Year B, and Luke in Year C. John's Gospel is used during Lent and Easter, and on some Sundays in Year B, since Mark is shorter than the other gospels.

St. Paul's has invited us to join with them in an Advent program. It will be held on Tuesdays beginning December 2. Pastor Anne will lead a class at 11 a.m. There will also be an evening Zoom class. The book being used is Advent for Everyone by N.T. Wright, based on the Book of Matthew.

Wants and Needs

Vestry Candidates: Individuals are needed to step up to fill Vestry vacancies that will occur in January. Please consider if you are called to serve on the Vestry. The requirements are that you are a Baptized member (Your Baptism is recorded in the church records), are regular in church attendance, have a record of giving, and have a willingness to work for the good of St. John's. Speak with any Vestry member if you have questions.

Pack-a-Sack Chairperson: At the end of this school year, Caroline Barnett will step away from chairing Pack-a-Sack after 9 years. The new chair would not officially take over until September 2026. However, we hope that someone will step up soon, so that he/she would have the opportunity to work alongside of Caroline for a period of time. Packing is done every other week during the school year.

Coffee Hour: Bring a treat to share - baked goods, salty items, fruit, cheese and crackers, casseroles - any and all are welcome.

The Thrift Shop is in great need of volunteers to work in the sorting room. They are also in need of donations of all kinds.
