St. John's Episcopal Church

To love, To serve, To grow in Christ

The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

October 19, 2025

  • Celebrant and Preacher: The Rev. Hugh O. Bell
  • Deacon Kevin Mort will assist.
  • Remember to enter the church quietly and spend time preparing your heart for worship. Please be respectful of those in prayer.

In the next few days, crews will begin tearing off and replacing roofs on the parish hall and Thelma's Place, bringing electric wiring up to code in Thelma's Place and replacing the HVAC system. The crews will do their best not to interfere with normal activities. However, there will be trucks, ladders, noise, etc. We suggest that you not park close to the parish hall when they are working. Please do your best not to interfere with the construction crews, as this helps to insure everyone's safety and allows the project to proceed smoothly.

Walk to School Day, Wednesday, Oct. 8

Parents and children from Belcher School gathered at St. John's to walk to school. There was a great turn out and a lot of excitement. Largo Police and Fire Department escorted them on the half-mile walk. Principal Dawn Lewis thanked the people of St. John's for all that we do to contribute to the life and well-being of their students.

Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Florida convention

The 57th Diocesan Convention was held at the Charlotte Harbor Event and Conference Center on Friday, October 10, and Saturday, October 11, 2025. The theme of this year's convention was Walking Together as One.

Thank you to our delegates were Mary Anders, Ron Joy and Ellen Seto, for representing St. John's. They will be reporting to us about the convention.

Addresses, business meetings and Friday afternoon sessions are all available to watch online at the Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Florida Facebook page and on the website at: https://www.conventionswfl.org/

Bishop Scharf's address on the state of the church is particularly enlightening, and we recommend that everyone watch it.

Feeding Families for Thanksgiving

St. John's, along with St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Hope Presbyterian Church, will be providing Thanksgiving bags for 30 needy families of children from Belcher Elementary School. Each church will have 10 bags to fill a bag with listed items. Caroline Barnett will have the bags on Sunday, along with a list of food items. A $25 Walmart gift card provided by St. John's will be added to each bag so that the family can purchase a turkey. Completed bags should be returned to St. John's no later than Sunday, Nov. 16 to be delivered to the school the following day.

Items requested for the bags: 2 cans green beans, 2 cans corn, 2 cans yams, 1 can cranberry sauce, 1 can/jar turkey gravy, 1 lg box turkey stuffing, 1 lg box instant mashed potatoes, 1 box biscuit or roll mix, 1 brownie mix.

Memories

One year ago today, October 14, in the aftermath of 3 hurricanes, our campus was a mess. No buildings were left untouched, including the sanctuary. Our service on Sunday morning was outdoors. It was months before all the buildings were restored.

Wants and Needs

Vestry Candidates: Two or three people are needed to step up to fill Vestry vacancies that will occur in January. Please consider if you are called to serve on the Vestry. The requirements are that you are a Baptized member (Your Baptism is recorded in the church records), are regular in church attendance, have a record of giving, and have a willingness to work for the good of St. John's. Speak with any Vestry member if you have questions.

Coffee Hour: Bring a treat to share - baked goods, salty items, fruit, cheese and crackers, casseroles - any and all are welcome.

The Thrift Shop is in great need of volunteers to work in the sorting room.
