Gulf Coast Mineral, Fossil, and Gem Club

NEXT MEETING: MONDAY, JULY 17TH

MICROFOSSIL WORKSHOP!

Club vice president Bill Howat will lead a microfossil workshop using matrix material from Aurora, NC. This Miocene material comes from a phosphate mine and contains vertebrate, invertebrate, and trace fossils. Also he will bring material from the old SMR location in Sarasota, which is Pliocene in age. He will provide plates and cups for us to use to sort and search - you may want to bring a magnifying glass and tweezers as well as a small flashlight. This will be a lot of fun... hope to see you there!

About Us

We currently meet on the third Monday of each month, with meet-and-greet starting at 6:30 PM and the actual meeting beginning at 7 PM.

Each meeting typically features a guest speaker and a raffle. Light refreshments are provided. Members and visitors are encouraged to bring their latest finds and acquisitions for sharing and also for ID help. Our members are a great source of information and are always willing to share their expertise.

Buy a bouquet and we'll get $1 from the

Winn-Dixie on Jacaranda

We are so excited to share that Venice Area Mobile Meals has been selected to benefit from Winn-Dixie's Bloomin' 4 Good Program, created to fight hunger across the communities they serve.

For the month of July, a $12.99 Bloomin' 4 Good Bouquet with the red circle sticker from the Winn-Dixie at 1254 Jacaranda Blvd will brighten a home or make someone's day while also directing a $1 donation to Venice Area Mobile Meals. This is a great way to broaden awareness in the local community and raise donations for our organization to help fight hunger.

Let's get started! Share the news with friends and family. Call, send emails and post on social media. The more bouquets sold, the more we can raise!

Hurricane Recovery Update

NEW PLANS. NEW CHALLENGES.

NEW MATCHING MONIES

The Gulf Coast Community Foundation is offering $500,000 in matching grants. $440,000 for Restoration and $60,000 for operating expenses. Many of you have been waiting for the opportunity to have your gifts doubled. The moment is NOW. Let's meet this challenge quickly!

NEW GOAL

The costs relating to rebuilding our theater have increased significantly. The theater suffered more extensive damage than originally thought - and the cost of materials has risen as well. Magnum Builders' proposed budget for the work that lies ahead is $13,620,000. With monies already raised - and monies that we know are coming - we will need an additional $7,000,000.

In addition, this year's operating budget will require $1,400,000 in contributed funds. Ticket revenue will be less than half of that we would expect to generate if the Jervey Theatre were operational. Be assured, the operating budget has been pared significantly.

So...we need to raise $8,400,000 in the coming fiscal year. Challenging, to be sure. Think of it in terms of $700,000 a month, or $23,0000 a day. It will take all of us - working diligently - to make it happen.

Please know that we have applied for numerous grants that have yet to be awarded - and we will be energetically seeking new sources of grant money. I am in the process of detailing a NEW PLAN to attain the goal, but I will be calling on all of you to assist in executing the plan. We can make it! But the CHALLENGE is great.

Roll up your sleeves and get ready for a year like no other.

Thank you all for your continued support,

Eric Watters

Director of Development
