GIS Day Open House at Venice City Hall
November 15
Get to know the City of Venice GIS squad and their cool contributions to the community during an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at City Hall on Geographic Information Systems Day, Wednesday, Nov. 15.
GIS data is a powerhouse tool that lets the City observe real-time information to help make real-world decisions. Staff can track stormwater, plan for water and wastewater utilities, parks, and green spaces, and keep tabs on building and development.
Meet the faces behind the maps: Community Rating System (CRS) Coordinator for Engineering and Stormwater Christina Rimes, Stormwater Engineer Steven Berens, Information Technology GIS Administrator Don Hubbard, Utilities GIS Analyst Will Smith, and Planning and Zoning GIS Analyst Kelsey Shope.
The group will have tables set up with monitors in the City Hall lobby, 401 W. Venice Ave., to give the public information on maps and other GIS data. Citizens can ask the staff questions about GIS, the maps they produce, and their positions with the City.

Article by Jean Barlow
In the Fall of our monthly concert season we feature an entire program of classical music. On Thursday, November 16th, 3:00 p.m., “Classical Connections” will showcase and reveal ties between composers and performers across the ages. Both vocally and instrumentally, we will witness how our younger, and older, artists are keeping the flame alive.
Event chair—and himself an accomplished concert pianist—Haig Yaghoobian has assembled an exciting array of performers including Venice Musicale regulars: soprano, Barbara Koning; Nick McKay on clarinet; Mary Egbertson, on piano; and violinist, Nancy Eldridge. Leo Chen, recent first place winner in the junior division of our Scholarship Program, will perform on piano. Also included in this second event of the 2023-2024 season is special guest artist, Franklyn Noll Skidmore, sharing among her many talents a performance on clarinet.
The setting for “Classical Connections” is the Venice Library Community Room, 300 Nokomis Ave., S., Venice 34285. The concert is free and open to the public. Donations are accepted for our Scholarship Program. To learn more about this arts organization, please visit VeniceMusicale.org.

NEXT MEETING: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 20TH
November’s meeting will feature flint knapper extraordinaire, Roger Hostetler. Roger has been knapping for many years and will demonstrate his skill for us with a knapping demonstration.
Flint knapping is not just about arrowheads and spears. Early humans had a vast knowledge of ways to use their natural resources such as rocks, minerals, and bones. Flint, the cryptocrystalline quartz that forms in chalk, is just one of many silica-rich minerals that can be used to make a wide variety of tools. Shaping and use of these tools was the advanced technology of the day.
Join us for this exciting demonstration as well as refreshments and a raffle!
Lastly, we will have plenty of tasty refreshments too, including apple cider. And, if you have a treat that you would like to bring, they are always welcome and appreciated. Hope to see you on the 20th!

City of Venice Holiday Parade
November 25
The 47th Annual Venice Holiday Parade is set for Saturday, Nov. 25 in downtown Venice.
Although there is early setup of chairs along the parade route the Wednesday evening before the parade, there will be no chairs set up or spectators allowed in the medians of the 100-300 blocks of W. Venice Ave. to protect the median landscaping. Any chairs, blankets or other items set up in the medians will be removed by the City of Venice Public Works Department at owners’ expense. This is to both protect the plantings in the medians and avoid any trip hazards. Parade-goers are asked to please follow the posted signage.
Pre-parade entertainment will be in two locations — the corner of Harbor Drive and W. Venice Ave. and the corner of Nokomis Ave. and W. Venice Ave, starting at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 26. The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m.
