We’re Waiving Pet Adoption Fees for our Clear the Shelter Event!

We are eliminating all adoption fees for all animals on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. as part of the national Clear the Shelters effort to find caring home for animals in shelters.

Currently, there are 16 cats, 64 dogs, 32 kittens and 1 rabbit waiting to be adopted. The capacity for dogs living at our center is 75, with new pets continually come to the shelter each day. In June and July alone, we took in 1631 animals!

“It’s a perfect opportunity if you have been considering adding a furry friend to your family, and the extra capacity helps keep operations running smoothly at our center,” said Vickie Adamson, Wake County Commissioner.

Currently, the regular adoption fees are $95 for dogs, $45 for cats under five years old, and $15 for cats that are greater than five years old. All adopted animals are spayed or neutered and microchipped prior to going home with their new family. On Aug. 27, all fees are eliminated.

“Animal shelters across the country are at, or near, capacity, including us, so we really need the community’s assistance to adopt, foster or volunteer to save these homeless pets,” said Dr. Jennifer Federico, director of the Wake County Animal Center. “We see more animals coming in than going out!”

Can’t wait until Aug. 27? Adopt NOW!  Check out our adoption gallery or come by and see the sweet faces for yourself

We have a special adoption discount for our long timer pets – adult dogs are $25 and adult cats are “name-your-price. The adoption campaign will run until August 26. It’s the perfect opportunity if you have been considering adding a furry friend to your family.

August National Pet Days

  • August 15th is National Check the Chip Day — a day to check your pets’ microchips and make sure they’re working and up to date. Microchips are extremely important for keeping your pets safe. Many lost dogs and cats reunite with their pet parents thanks to their chips.

  1. Make an appointment with your veterinarian for microchipping if your pet isn’t already microchipped (then make sure that your pet’s chip is immediately registered).
  2. Check your already-microchipped pet’s registration information in the microchip manufacturer’s database, and make sure it’s up to date.

  • Have you ever feared a black cat crossing your path? But not everyone sees black cats this way. In fact, black cats are welcomed by a lot of people. For some, a visit from a black cat means good luck, and for others it meant prosperity or romance. In some cultures, black cats are even worshipped. Basically, there’s no need to fear them. On August 17, National Black Cat Appreciation Day, we celebrate our cuddly friends, no matter what color their coat is!

  •  August 22nd is National Bring Your Cat to the Vet Day, and the perfect opportunity to schedule your cat’s routine check-up. We know how well loved and cared for your pets are, but nevertheless, don’t waste time and take your cat to the vet to find out if your pet is in a good health condition. And then give them a special treat for the upheaval!
