Faculty Spotlight - Stacia DeSantis PhD
Dr. DeSantis originally started her academics studying Theoretical Physics, but changed her concentration to math and biology. After working at the Center of Disease Control, she realized she was best at analyzing data. Her experiences inspired her to pursue study in the field of biostatistics, first as a Master's student at Columbia University and eventually as a PhD student at Harvard.

Dr. DeSantis started at UTHealth Department of Biostatistics and Data Science as an Associate Professor in 2012. Through her experience, she has learned a few important characteristics in being a biostatistician. "Communication, the ability to communicate with people across a variety of disciplines. I really work into all my classes...time for communication through writing up assignments where [students] have to share their statistical results to a broad audience, a clinical audience, and learning to communicate reports from our software."
Aside from her teaching, Dr. DeSantis has worked on numerous grants, and has been invited to several different organizations for presentations. In her most recent grants project she worked as the Principal Investigator for researching " Clinical Decision-Making Using Multivariate Network Meta-Analysis."
In her most recent research presentation, Dr. DeSantis spoke at a joint statistical meeting in Vancouver, Canada about Multivariate Network Meta-analysis to Mitigate Outcome Reporting Bias.

In 2019,Dr. DeSantis earned her position as a tenured full professor in the department. Her work continues to make important contributions to the field of Biostatistics. Thank you for being a part of our team Dr. DeSantis.
Staff Spotlight -
Congratulations Kevin Banks
Congratulations Kevin Banks for earning your Applied Biomedical Informatics Certificate. Mr. Banks, a Research Coordinator with the Department of Biostatistics and Data Science since 2018, earned his certification in hopes of finding an executive position at a hospital or medical center. He believes earning the certificate will help him achieve his ultimate goal.

In his own words "strategic planning health information is a crucial aspect in healthcare delivery moving forward. This certificate is the entry way for aspiring healthcare leaders to embrace the revolution within healthcare fueled by consolidating information and data.

Congratulations Kevin Banks.
Biostatistics Student Association
Revitalized, Re-energized
The Biostatistics Student Association (BSA) was relaunched in Spring of 2018, and has been very busy putting on academic and social events throughout the school year.

Due to the dedication of club officers, the Biostatistic Student Association has put together many successful, well-attended events. From the back to school socials, to club meetings, to bringing in seminar speakers, the organization has been hard at work this school year.

In their last event, the association brought R-Studio Chief Scientist Dr. Hadley Wickham to present to faculty and students. Click the link below to learn more about past and upcoming events.
