4th Annual Arrowhead Translational Microbiome Conference, Boston, MA, April 18-20

As the official conference of The Microbiome Coalition (TMBC) the Arrowhead conference brings together senior executives and top decision-makers in the industry to advance our understanding of the hurdles and challenges to commercial success in the space.

Now in its fourth year, the Arrowhead conference features several in-depth, interactive pre-conference workshops and a main track focused across therapies and disease states. With $36M Series B, Finch Goes Full Speed Ahead in Microbiome Therapy Finch Therapeutics, a privately held microbiome therapeutics company, announced the successful close of an oversubscribed $36 million Series B financing, bringing the total capital raised since the Company’s launch to $77 million. Investors in the Series B include Shumway Capital, Willet Advisors, Morgan Noble and Avenir Growth Capital. Full press release here

Second Genome Strengthens R&D Program in Immuno-Oncology with Four Academic Collaborations Second Genome announced the initiation of four collaborations with key academic institutions to evaluate the effect of gut microbiota on individual response to cancer immunotherapies. The separate collaborations are with  Stanford Cancer Institute Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center , and  John Theurer Cancer Center , part of Hackensack Meridian Health. DuPont’s Microbiome Venture Announces Second Strategic Partnership Three months after its formation, the DuPont Nutrition & Health Microbiome Venture today announced its second strategic research and development partnership. The newly forged relationship with the Center of Food and Fermentation Technologies (TFTAK) in Tallinn, Estonia, will focus on developing cultivation and bioprocess capabilities for “next-generation” probiotics. The Forsyth Institute Expands Key Human Microbiome Database A team of researchers from The Forsyth Institute, a global leader in oral health research, today announced they have added over 80 species to generate the expanded Human Oral Microbiome Database (eHOMD), an online index of microbial species present in the mouth and respiratory tract, including the nasal passages and throat. Microbiome Cycles Revealed by Low-Cost Gnotobiotic Cages While developing a low-cost alternative to traditional gnotobiotic isolators, a team of researchers at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) were able to characterize cyclical changes in the microbiomes of gnotobiotic mice. Their research has implications for both the design and affordability of gnotobiotic animal model research. Full article here

FDA Clears Clinical Studies for New Bacteriophage Treatment for Crohn’s Disease The U.S. FDA gave its seal of approval to a new Phase 1/2 clinical trial in humans at Mount Sinai hospital in NYC to test a new bacteriophage treatment for Crohn's disease. It would be one of the first investigational new drug (IND) applications ever approved for bacteriophages by the FDA and is also the first approved to target what is known as adhesive invasive E. coli (AIEC), a strain of bacteria that can be found in people who have Crohn's. Global Virome Project Will Spend Next 10 Years Identifying Unknown Viruses in the Wild  Following recent outbreaks of viruses such as Zika and Ebola, public health researchers are increasingly working to discover new viruses before they emerge and cause human outbreaks.
