Issue 2025-2

Dear Reader,

We are proud to announce that the Feasibility and Ambitiousness (FAB) Dashboard has been officially launched on June 24 on the Sovereign ESG Data Portal. This new tool is designed to support evidence-based decision-making by helping users set and assess Sustainability Performance Targets (SPTs) that are both ambitious and feasible to achieve.

To help you get familiar with the Dashboard and the broader Sovereign ESG Data Portal— supported by the Global Program on Sustainability (GPS) and now part of the Natural Capital Data Hub, an integrated platform for natural capital-related data—we are introducing two new recurring features in our newsletter:

  • “ESG Data Portal – Tips & Tricks” – A quick and practical guide to navigating the portal more effectively.
  • “ESG Indicator Spotlight” – In each issue, we zoom in on one key ESG indicator available on the portal - exploring its definition, importance, and how to apply it in real-world contexts.

In this edition, we share new data and insights with a spotlight on Côte d'Ivoire's Sustainability-Linked Loan journey, deep diving into its forestry and energy KPIs. Have you noticed that the data on the portal has been updated? Read all about it in our latest data update story.

As always, we hope this content supports your work and sparks new ideas.

Sincerely yours,

Sovereign ESG Data Portal team

FAB DASHBOARD LAUNCH EVENT

Thank you to all who joined the launch of the FAB Dashboard, now live on the Sovereign ESG Data Portal.

The panel featured a diverse group of experts who shared insights from both policy and market perspectives:

  • Marek Hanusch, Lead Economist and Program Leader of the Equitable Growth, Finance, and Institutions practice group for Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, and Uganda, World Bank Group
  • Moustapha Bamba, Deputy Director of Private Finance, Ministry of Finance and Budget, Côte d’Ivoire
  • Maggie O'Neal, Global Head of Sustainable Investing Research, Barclays
  • Gianleo Frisari, Senior Financial Sector Specialist, World Bank
  • Dieter Wang, Senior Consultant, World Bank

The event highlighted how FAB supports performance-based finance by helping users set sustainability targets that are both ambitious and achievable. Speakers emphasized the importance of clarity and credibility in sustainability-linked instruments to unlock green capital and drive policy impact. They also stressed the value of data-driven target setting to ensure realism and accountability, with targets serving not just as financial anchors but also as benchmarks for public policy performance. Discussions underscored the broader economic value of credible targets—from green jobs to long-term development gains. From Côte d'Ivoire to Kenya, countries are already using the FAB tool to align finance with climate goals, even in fiscally constrained settings.

For those who couldn’t attend or who would like to have a closer look at the tool, you can now watch the live demo of the FAB tool from the event here below, along with a series of short animated videos that explain how the tool works and how it can support your sustainability-linked finance journey.

ESG DATA PORTAL TIPS & TRICKS

Land cover transitions: focus on what has changed

When analyzing land cover dynamics, you can use the "Only show changes" option in the Land Cover Transitions tool (at the top of your graph) to highlight areas where land use has shifted over time. This feature filters out static land cover, allowing you to concentrate on significant transitions and changes.

ESG INDICATOR SPOTLIGHT

Forest area (% of land area)

This widely used indicator tracks the proportion of a country’s land area covered by forests. It is essential for understanding deforestation trends, biodiversity loss, and climate change mitigation potential. The data is collected by FAO as part of their Global Forest Resources Assessment. Explore this indicator on the Sovereign ESG Data Portal to monitor long-term land use patterns and inform forest-related policy decisions.
