HERITAGE CORNER BY HELEN CLOSE
In recent months you’ve probably heard quite a bit from me about Verena Holmes, particularly as some of her diaries were donated to the WES archive during our centenary celebrations.
Verena Holmes was one of our early members, president, and a driving force behind encouraging girls and women into engineering. After the end of the second world war, Verena was frustrated by the lack of options available to her and other women in the sector and wanted to start her own venture, a company that employed only women.
She did this setting up a firm called Holmes and Leather in 1946 with a new WES member, Sheila Leather. The company designed and manufactured safety paper-cutting guillotines. One of which has kindly been donated to the WES Collection by Dr Nina Baker. WES would like to thank Dr Baker for her contribution.

WHO WAS SHEILA LEATHER?
Sheila Leather was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire in on 17th January 1898. Her father John Walter Leather was an analytical chemist and her mother was Annie nee Lyon. Sheila had two sisters Alice Muriel born in 1889 and Wenonah Hardwick born in 1890. Her father was the head of the chemical department at the Imperial Agricultural Research Institute established in 1904 at Pusa in Bihar, India.
Leather was a boarder at Liverpool High School for Girls in 1911, (presumably her family were in Pusa as both sisters married there) and before the Second World War she was a Physical Training Lecturer at Hockerill Training College, Bishop Stortford, Hertfordshire. In 1921, aged 25, according to the 1921 census, she was residing in a boarding house in Glenmore Road, Minehead, and employed by Glamorgan County Council as a secondary school mistress.

BREAKING THE BIAS
To mark this year’s #BreakTheBias theme for International Women’s Day, Sairah gives her personal view on the impact of misleading stereotypes on a career in the Stem sectors and manufacturing, and why we must educate young people on the fulfilling career paths within each:
I was recently asked what International Women’s Day means to me. As a female working in an industry that male workers have historically dominated, I am passionate about encouraging more women to follow their dreams. Today marks a movement to empower that change. The theme for this year is #BreakTheBias – imagining a gender equal world, free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. It is upon all of us to enable this.
When I was younger, I never imagined myself as an engineer.

STEM RETURNERS PROGRAMME
Many skilled and experienced professionals take career breaks to care for family members, to travel or study, or for health or other personal reasons.
With the STEM Returners programme, the Ministry of Defence de&s are dedicated to supporting and empowering these individuals to regain skills and confidence as they return to the workplace.
They promote an inclusive work environment where everyone is supported to be themselves and achieve their ambitions, so we’ve launched this programme to encourage talented individuals to do just this.

CELEBRATING WOMEN IN ENGINEERING
Do you remember using one of those special guillotines to cut paper at school?
Do you still use one?! Did you know they were invented by a woman?
It's women's history month and we're all about Astounding Inventions this year so we've been chatting with our friends at the Women's Engineering Society.
Heritage Officer, Helen Close is here to share a few highlights from their records and ask if you can help celebrate more of these extraordinary women.

EDI SIG WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS
Engineering UK have published a briefing on women in engineering, which includes the new headline figure that 16.5% of those working in engineering roles are women.
The briefing summarises how the gender composition of the engineering workforce has changed over the last 11 years. It shows that while the percentage and number of women in engineering has increased, these strides have been concentrated in certain roles and industries, with women more likely to be in related – rather than core – engineering roles and working in industries outside of what is traditionally deemed to be the ‘engineering sector’.

WES is a community of people both in and out of STEM with the common goal of promoting women in engineering. Whether you want to lead engineering into the future, expand your network or make some new interesting friends, joining WES is a great place to start.
