REDD+ SAFEGUARDS UPDATE
The UN-REDD Programme has supported developing countries for more than ten years in the development of approaches to address and respect the safeguards.
As a result of this support, in 2019 ten countries made progress in the report of safeguards: Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cote d’Ivoire, Honduras, Myanmar, Paraguay, Peru, Viet Nam, and Zambia. Also, seven countries advanced in the design and operation of their Safeguards Information Systems (SIS) at a national level: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cote d’Ivoire, Myanmar, Paraguay, and Zambia. More information about the global progress in the safeguards elements of the Warsaw Framework for REDD+ can be found in the
first blog.
The Programme is pleased to share information on the progress of the safeguards processes. Technical documents were developed to support activities in Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America and the Caribbean. The last three years, the focus has been placed in assisting countries to develop their Safeguards Information Systems (SIS) and making them operational, as well as on helping them in the elaboration of summaries of information.

REDD+ Safeguards Information Systems: Moving from design to operation
Info Brief
|
|
The SIS is a required element for REDD+ implementation, agreed by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and a prerequisite for results-based payments under this Convention and the Green Climate Fund. This Info Brief summarizes key considerations for putting a SIS into operation, based on initial country experiences. It aims to support the developing country government institutions, and their key partners in the design of the SIS or the actions to make it operational. Considerations are presented around four functional responsibilities, which are compile and manage, analyze and interpret, assure quality and validate, and disseminate and use safeguards information.
