Dear Friends,

What an extraordinary few months this has been! From the remote wetlands of Australia's Northern Territory to the sun-drenched shores of southern California, from cutting-edge AI laboratories to ancient cultural centres in Greece, the Foundation's work is reaching new heights. We're thrilled to share some exciting developments with you.

The Discovery That Could Rewrite History

Imagine stumbling across a small bronze seal in the Australian outback and discovering it might be 700 years old… and Chinese. That's exactly what happened near Tortilla Flats in the Northern Territory.

This isn't just any seal. It's an imperial ritual artefact, the kind used in ceremonial contexts by Chinese mariners. The figure depicted is Marshal Zhao Gongming, a Daoist deity who protected sailors and guided ships across dangerous waters. Think of it as ancient China's patron saint of navigation.

What makes this particularly fascinating is where it was found: buried in wetland clay in the remote Northern Territory, over a hundred miles from the sea. If authenticated, this could be one of the most significant pieces of evidence yet for early Chinese exploration of Australia, perhaps centuries before European contact.

The Expert View

We've already had some encouraging feedback. Dr. Luk Yu-ping from the British Museum has examined the inscriptions and confirmed they're genuine ancient Chinese script used in ritual contexts. Metallurgy experts have verified that the casting techniques are consistent with Chinese imperial workshops from the Tang through Yuan dynasties (roughly 7th to 14th centuries). In other words, this can't be a modern fake: the manufacturing methods simply didn't exist in recent times.

You can read the report here.

What Happens Next?

We're now pursuing comprehensive scientific testing: X-ray fluorescence, electron microscopy, and isotopic analysis. This will tell us not just how old it is, but potentially where the metal was mined and when it was cast.

Building an AI Brain for Maritime History

Here's a question: what do you do with a 25 year’s worth of research scattered across documents, maps, photographs, and field notes? You could spend years searching through filing cabinets... or you could ask our new AI!

We’re building something rather extraordinary: the world's first AI-powered knowledge system for the history of pre-Columbian maritime exploration. Think of it as having a research assistant who has read everything we've ever written and read, remembers every detail, and can answer complex questions in seconds.

Want to know where we've found Ming dynasty pottery? What about anchor designs across different periods in time? Instead of weeks of research, you'll get an answer (with sources and cross-references) almost instantly.

The 1421 AI project is now well underway. It brings together thousands of documents, maps, and datasets into a structured, searchable knowledge base.

Ultimately, this AI system won’t just be a technological upgrade - it’s a breakthrough that will transform how discoveries are made. By unlocking patterns no human could detect, surfacing forgotten evidence, and connecting clues spread across decades of research, it will accelerate our ability to validate historical hypotheses and uncover new ones.

In short, it frees our researchers to focus on discovery rather than paperwork, turning over 25 years of accumulated knowledge into a living engine for insight. This is how we move from interesting leads to world‑changing findings… and we can’t wait!

New Partnerships & Exciting Leads

A Factory of Ancient Symbols in Greece

Dr. Minas Tsikritsis, an old friend of Gavin, who contributed significantly to the research and writing of The Lost Empire of Atlantis, has created something remarkable in Greece: a 'Factory of Symbols and Ideas.' He has documented 2,500 ancient Aegean symbols that suggest the Minoans might have traded as far as India, Yemen, and even the Americas. We are currently exploring how we might collaborate on this game-changing research. You can find out more about his work here

Spotlight: The "Monkey God" of California?

We recently received a fascinating lead from a supporter in Southern California that perfectly illustrates why we keep looking. Back in the 1950s, while digging an irrigation line near the coast, a family unearthed a carved stone head. Local, state, and federal experts were stumped - the local indigenous communities did not traditionally carve stone in this style.

After reading 1421, the owner began cross-referencing the artifact with Asian iconography and found a striking resemblance to Hanuman, the Hindu/Buddhist monkey god. Could this be a relic left by early explorers on the Pacific coast? We are currently gathering more details to see if this "out-of-place" artifact could be another piece of the puzzle.

Ancient Sparks: Redefining Early Technology

While our focus is on maritime exploration, we keep a close eye on global archaeological breakthroughs that support our core belief: that human history is far more advanced and interconnected than previously thought.

A ground-breaking study recently published in Nature revealed evidence of deliberate fire ignition by ancient humans at Barnham, England, dating back 400,000 years. This pushes back the timeline for controlled fire-making by an incredible 350,000 years. It proves that our ancestors possessed sophisticated material knowledge and planning abilities long before "modern" history began. Just as these early humans were mastering technology in the British outback, we believe later mariners were mastering the oceans with equal ingenuity.

Building Academic Credibility

Under Dr. Mark M. Newell's leadership, we're continuing to develop rigorous documentation standards. This ensures that when we publish findings, they meet international academic standards and command respect in the scholarly community.

The Boring-But-Important Bit: Gift Aid

We delighted that we have now submitted our Gift Aid application to the UK’s HMRC. Once approved, for every pound donated by UK taxpayers to the Gavin Menzies Research Foundation, we automatically get an extra 25 pence from the government at no extra cost to you. It adds up remarkably quickly and will go directly to funding our exciting field work.

Help Us Keep Exploring

Continuing our work depends entirely on your support. If you share our passion for discovery, please consider making a financial contribution. If you are unable to do so, we are always grateful for a donation of your time and expertise, or even a share of this newsletter or a copy of 1421 to others who will find it of interest.

For UK based donors: please donate to the Gavin Menzies Research Foundation https://gavinmenziesresearchfoundation.org/support-us

For US based donors: please donate to The 1421 Foundation https://www.1421foundation.org/donate

Every gift supports research, education, and the next wave of discovery.
