Steven Leyva, associate professor, first came to UBalt as a student and graduated from the same program in which he now teaches, the MFA in Creative Writing & Publishing Arts. Last spring, Leyva earned tenure, becoming the first Black professor in the college to reach the milestone. | |
Professor Marion Winik has been named the winner of the 2023 National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) Service Award. Founded in 1974 and considered among the most prestigious in American letters, the NBCC Awards are the sole prizes bestowed by a jury of working critics and book review editors. The awards for publishing year 2023 will be presented during a special ceremony on March 21 at the New School in New York City. | |
Associate Dean Ron Castanzo (far left) and adjunct faculty member Isaac Shearn (2nd from right) received a 2023 Historic Preservation Award from Baltimore Heritage, Inc. for their contributions to A Place for Memory, a new book on Baltimore's historic Laurel Cemetery. Castanzo contributed vital research to the publication, and Shearn served as the book's co-editor. Castanzo and Shearn received their awards during the organization's annual Preservation Celebration held last fall. | |
Late last fall, Gov. Wes Moore announced the appointment of The Honorable Cheri Nicole Simpkins to the Prince George's County Circuit Court. In 2017, Judge Simpkins was appointed to the District Court for Prince George’s County by then-Gov. Larry Hogan. Prior to that, she was a prosecutor in the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office for 15 years. Judge Simpkins is an adjunct faculty member who teaches in our Legal Studies programs. | |

Remembering Tom Carney
Tom Carney, associate professor emeritus in the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences, passed away on Nov. 26, 2023 at the age of 74 after facing a prolonged illness. A viewing to celebrate his life and a mass in his honor were held in December of last year.
Tom was a highly regarded faculty member in the college, making significant contributions to the graduate Legal Studies program and the undergraduate History and Jurisprudence programs. His popularity among students stemmed from his rigorous and engaging teaching style, leaving an enduring impact on those he taught. In recognition of his outstanding service as both division chair and program director, Tom was honored with the YGCAS Faculty Distinguished Service Award in 2013. He chose to retire in 2019, and the college acknowledged his dedication by appointing him associate professor emeritus.
Tom was not only respected but deeply admired and valued at UBalt as a teacher, colleague and friend.

Earlier this month, students from the College of Arts and Sciences were invited to attend a special reception and book talk at Enoch Pratt Free Library with Peabody-Award winning journalist Michele Norris (pictured center), author of Our Hidden Conversations. During her talk, Norris offered a transformative dialogue on race and identity in America, unearthed through her decade-long work at The Race Card Project. Norris was joined in conversation by civil rights lawyer and former President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Sherrilyn Ifill. | |

Jane Delury, professor of English and author, designed a class to show rather than tell her students the value a place can have in a story. She took her Writing Baltimore students to several spots throughout the city, including Penn Station, The Walters Art Museum, and Green Mount Cemetery, to find inspiration that they could pour into their final projects.

Winter 2024 Study Abroad: Barcelona, Spain
Each year, the Industrial and Organizational Psychology (IOP) master's program offers several global engagement opportunities, including study abroad. During the winterim 2024 semester, IOP students collaborated on a project both virtually and in person with their counterparts from the University of Barcelona in Spain. The in-person component of this program consisted of a 10-day trip to Barcelona.
