YOUR PASTOR'S MUSING
His mentor and friend told a story about one Sunday when the two entrances to the sanctuary were marked SAINT and SINNER. His friend laughed:
“Caused quite a pile-up in the narthex!”
It was a false choice, of course. Simul justus et peccator. Luther’s Latin for both saint and sinner. That’s every single one of us.
But he knows how, in his own life, there are times when he feels like he walks through one door and not the other.
He was sitting in the coffeeshop, a few minutes early for his meetup. The heat of the day had zapped him beyond thinking about matters of serious theological importance. To his annoyance, a fly buzzed against the window.
Another customer rose stealthily from the table and trapped the insect underneath his paper cup, then deftly slid his free hand over the top, opened the side door, and released the fly to the bright outside. As this patron saint of flies sat back down, an onlooker was reminded that there are no small acts of kindness.
In faith, and hope,
Andrew
