This program includes instruction of water safety education, first aid, CPR and leadership skills. These program areas complement each other, teaching a respect for Mother Earth, and especially the element of water.
Participants have 2 years to complete the program. Registration and intake happens each year in August and September. However, we do take applicants in throughout the program year on a monthly basis as space is available.
An additional year may be granted based upon eligibility and program space.
Qualifications

Fill out the Application Form and participate in an interview with the Nîkânîw programmer
- Indigenous Ancestry - First Nation, Métis, Inuit or other
- 14-22 years old during the program season
- Committed to training in aquatics
- Able to commit to regularly attending the program
Participants Will Receive
- A City of Edmonton Leisure Centre facility pass for the duration of enrolment
- Program supplies and materials
- A meal on the first session of each week
- Aquatic leadership courses provided by the City of Edmonton

RBC Future Launch Scholarship
This scholarship is for students who are currently not in school or are only partaking in part-time studies but are looking to gain new skills for the modern workforce. Recipients will be selected based on their drive and excitement for lifelong learning, and on how they plan to use the funds to pursue a new learning opportunity to start, change, or grow their career.

Eligibility: Must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident, be between the ages of 15-29, not enrolled in full-time education (high school, college, or university) , not be an RBC employee or dependent of an RBC employee.

ScholarshipsCanada.com is part of the SchoolFinder Group. The site has been helping students find scholarships since 1997. Their mission is to help students realize their dreams by making it possible for students to attend the school of their choice without being limited by the cost.
The website lists all relevant scholarships and bursaries free of charge. They try to update each listing annually and students are matched to scholarships and bursaries when they create an account.

Students in foundational learning or skills development programs may qualify for funding to cover education and living costs.
Foundational Learning Assistance helps you:
- Improve English language skills
- Complete academic upgrading for a high school diploma or post-secondary prerequisites
- Gain in-demand skills for employment
This monthly financial award is based on household financial need and covers:
- Educational costs: tuition, mandatory fees, student association fees, and books and supplies
- Living costs: food, clothing, personal needs, transportation, rent/mortgage, and utilities
Eligibility:
- Enrolled in an approved program for Foundational Learning Assistance
- 18 years of age or 16-17 under certain circumstances (see policy manual)
- Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected person legally entitled to work and study in Canada
- Valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
Residency:
- Established Alberta address
- In Alberta at the time of acceptance into the program
- Border community residents are considered residents of their home postal code province/territory
Employment Status:
- Unemployed or working less than 20 hours per week
Over 40 educational providers in Alberta offer approved programs, including public post-secondary institutions, private career colleges, First Nations colleges, and non-profit organizations. Contact institutions directly to check program approval for Foundational Learning Assistance.
