In our
November Newsletter
we began an article series on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). In Article 2 of this series we introduce the 5 core competencies of SEL and their impact on education. Our intent is to create a connection to what we are doing in our classrooms and schools throughout the District.
The 5 core competencies of SEL:
- Self-awareness
- Self-management
- Social awareness
- Relationship skills
- Responsible decision-making
SEL for Parents
(youtube video) is a brief video that provides a great introduction into each of the competencies.
Why focus on SEL in schools?
The impact of an SEL focus in education is documented by over two decades of research. From improved academic and behavior outcomes, to positive long-term societal impacts, the benefits are clear. We encourage you to learn more about the impact at these resources:
SEL Impact
(casel.org) - Highlights impact in school, work, and society
Our goal is to help children develop their social and emotional intelligence so that they can experience improved academic success and be an integral part of building a positive school climate. As the research shows, these benefits will impact students well beyond their academic years.
Why do parents need to know about SEL?
As parents, teachers, administrators, and community members, we all play a part in a childâs social and emotional learning. SEL takes place at home, just as much as it does at school. The impact of SEL at school is greatly enhanced when parents are able to reinforce the learning at home. Many of us find that we are learning right along with the children, and thatâs okay. SEL isnât just for kids. These are skills that we are constantly honing as we mature and have new life experiences.
Each and every day children are watching us manage our emotions and relationships, so itâs important that we model positive social and emotional skills. Through this article series we will share resources that you might find helpful for your familyâs social and emotional learning at home.
