Elder Spotlight

Dr. Lloyd Cavers

Tanshi! I am honoured to be an Elder with the Lethbridge and Area Métis Association. I am originally from Manitoba and am a Red River Michif, now residing in Lethbridge. Southern Alberta is my home, where I have worked with people from east to west. Along with others, I am dedicated to bringing the best possible service for Métis families.

There are two things that I like most about my role as an Elder. First, I enjoy working with such a great group of people, who are committed and dedicated to bringing the best services to our Métis of all ages. Their dedication is inspiring. Second, I am a teacher and a committed learner and as an Elder and Knowledge Keeper I get to learn as well as teach. After many years as a Superintendant of schools with a focus on student learning and leadership, I get to visit classrooms again!

"Whatever knowledge I have, I will share"

Personal learning and watching others learn brings satisfaction. Now, in my 80's, I know I have learned many lessons, but fear that wisdom still eludes me. I do know that I don't know much more than I know!

Dr. Cavers is a valued member of our community and we appreciate all the work he has done, and continues to do to promote Métis visibility and culture. Maarsii to you Lloyd!

The wisdom of our Elders is the light that guides the way, in their years they hold the stories of yesterday and the seeds of tomorrow.

Canadian Benefit for Parents of Young Victims of Crime

The death or disappearance of a child is devastating and can leave parents unable to work. If you are a parent or legal guardian who consider to/or have taken time away from work and suffered a loss of income to cope with the death or disappearance of your child or children, you may be eligible for federal income support.

The benefit provides eligible parents with payments of $500 per week, paid every 2 weeks, for a maximum of 35 weeks over a period of 3 years.

You can decide to stop receiving the benefit at any time and restart receipt of the benefit at a later date within the 3 years following the incident.

You can share the weeks with other eligible recipients.

April at a Glance

On April 13 we joined at Helen Schuler Nature Centre to learn about at risk birds and threats to our grassland habitat. Our friends learned how to introduce ourselves in Michif and some bird and plant names in Michif as well. It was a beautiful spring day to get outside and connect with our community!

We travelled to Claresholm to work with some lovely students and staff. Dr. Lloyd Cavers and Garrett Delorme joined Brittany to share Metis history, artifacts, culture, music and dance with our friends from Livingstone School Division. We are always grateful to help those who want to learn!

Kaa-wiichitoyaahk
