Heritage Management Plan

The Battle of the Belly River, fought in 1870 in the river valley of Sikóóhkotok (present-day City of Lethbridge), is recognized as the last major battle between First Nations in Canada. This battle holds significance in our history, with much of Sikóóhkotok’s river valley and coulee uplands forming the expansive battlefield. Given the historical importance, the City of Lethbridge is developing an Indigenous-led, values-based, and community-driven Heritage Management Plan for the site.

In collaboration with Indigenous communities, including the Lethbridge Métis, this plan integrates Indigenous perspectives into heritage management, emphasizing self-governance and honoring Indigenous knowledge and traditions.

The primary goal is to support meaningful connections between Indigenous communities and their heritage within Sikóóhkotok.

As part of the planning process, we seek to understand the past and present significance of the site to the Lethbridge and Area Métis.

Historical records of Métis involvement in the battle are currently limited, and we are eager to learn more about their role. If there are oral histories, stories, artwork, beadwork, songs or dances that offer insights into the Métis participation in the battle, we invite our community to share them with us. Additionally, we are interested in hearing how the Lethbridge and Area Métis use and value the site today.

To foster dialogue and encourage participation, we will be hosting a virtual engagement session, and invite all interested individuals to register and be involved. Your contributions are vital to shaping a comprehensive and inclusive understanding of the Battle of the Belly River, and we look forward to hearing from you.

If you are unable to make the date of the engagement, we encourage you to reach out to our office to share any information, or set up a personal session with you or your family.

Species at Risk

In partnership with the Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources (CIER), we want to engage our Métis community in education about species at risk and how they are managed in our region. We will be sharing information through virtual or in-person sessions about the initiative, about environmental conservation in Southern Alberta, and especially looking for your perspectives on Species at Risk management through a Metis perspective.

If you are interested in learning more about environmental conservation and management, or if you would like to get more involved, please let us know!

Our first session will be an introduction to species at risk, CIER, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and the work we are planning in the months ahead. Please join us either virtually or in person at our office on Feb 19 in the afternoon (Time TBD)

The First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) bursary program provides funding for Indigenous students in the form of a non-repayable bursary if you agree to live and work in northern Alberta for one year of full-time employment in return for each year of bursary support received. Employment must be in your field of studies for which the bursary was provided.

The goal of this bursary is to assist FNMI students to obtain the skills and knowledge to enter or re-enter the workforce in northern Alberta.

Athabasca University is launching a free massive online open course (MOOC) to tackle anti-Indigenous racism in health care. The course teaches about the roots of racism and discrimination Indigenous people experience in accessing care, and the role of advocacy and allyship in addressing these issues.

The courses provide essential knowledge for health-care professionals, but also for anyone who wants to understand the struggles of Indigenous communities and learn how to recognize and confront systemic racism.

AU developed the courses with financial support from Health Canada and in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action. A team led by Indigenous leaders and health professionals worked together to create the course content.

We had an amazing time with our members of all ages making memories at our New Year Gathering. We enjoyed a cultural meal, a community raffle, and even a crafting corner and scavenger hunt for the kids. The Alberta Genealogy Society was there sharing information and resources, and Brody Jerome serenaded us with his guitar.

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported our event,

maarsii and kawapamitin. (Thank you and see you soon!)

In the first week of our Métis Youth Drop-In Program, Dr. Llyod Cavers shared his amazing collection of Artifacts and stories about Métis Culture and History.
