AIA Indiana Emergency Response Team - Volunteers Wanted and Training Opportunities -The AIA Indiana Emergency Response Team works alongside the Indiana Building Emergency Assessment and Monitoring Team (I-BEAM) to provide safety assessments for buildings damaged by natural disasters.
The AIA Indiana Emergency Response Team currently has 35 members who have completed the nationally recognized Safety Assessment Program (SAP) training and are certified as Building Evaluators available for deployment to disaster events. We need to increase our numbers because natural disasters occur with little notice, and not everyone will be available at any given time. Having more volunteers ready to respond provides the flexibility needed to quickly assemble a response team when disaster strikes.
If this sounds like an effort you’d like to be part of, please register for training and reach out to AIA Indiana Disaster Assistance Coordinator Steve Alspaugh, FAIA, at salspaugh@schmidt-arch.com.
An upcoming SAP training session is scheduled for November 18-19. CLICK HERE to learn more and register.
Intended for licensed architects, engineers, and certified building inspectors, this training certifies attendees as Building Evaluators in the nationally recognized Safety Assessment Program (SAP). Participants will also earn 6.5 AIA HSW LUs.
The training is conducted virtually, but the instructors are live, making it an interactive class held from noon to 4:00 p.m. on two consecutive afternoons. Participants will then take an online exam through Cal OES (California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services). Once the exam is successfully completed, participants may apply for certification with Cal OES as a Building Evaluator. The certification is valid for five years.

AIA National News & Misc.
AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index (ABI) September 2026 - The national index fell to 44.7, down from 47.2 in August, indicating that business conditions at architecture firms weakened further. The Midwest continues to outperform the national market, with its regional index holding relatively steady at 50.6. A reading above 50 indicates growth, while a reading below 50 indicates contraction. What do these results mean for Indiana, the Midwest's 50.6 reading is encouraging, especially compared with the South (43.1) and Northeast (39.1). However, the sharp decline in new design contracts nationally suggests that firms may continue facing challenges converting project inquiries into signed agreements. Please keep in mind, the Midwest index reflects regional conditions, not Indiana specifically. CLICK HERE to learn more.
