Henderson County EMS Receives Duke Energy Foundation Grant

Thank you Duke Energy Foundation for your amazing generosity! This grant supports the county's All-Hazards Response Initiative by allowing us to host an All-Hazards Strike Team Leader Class (in partnership with Blue Ridge Community College), purchase a Rapid Deployment Shelter System for use at an Incident Command Post in the field, and purchase a Water Rescue Trailer to transport boats and deployment supplies for the Henderson County Technical Rescue Team. We appreciate our partners in this community and are truly grateful for their support.

Henderson County's Welcome Center

gets a new look

Melanie Black, Internal Communications Coordinator for the Henderson County Tourism Development Authority, gives us the scoop.

One question we have heard a lot of at the Welcome Center is,

“What is that ugly gray building on the corner in front of the Welcome Center?”

Many people come in each week asking.

In case you too have been wondering, I'm happy to tell you that it is not a permanent structure on Main Street! This will be the temporary Hendersonville Welcome Center while we renovate the interior of the building.

The first sledgehammer will be swung on May 1st and we were quoted a 10-month timeline (but you know how it is with construction). The temporary building will primarily be a space for visitors, with most of our staff working remotely. We are not especially excited about the renovation process itself. Still, we are very much looking forward to the updated Welcome Center, which will both separate the tourism offices from the visitor space, and heavily focus on improving the visitor experience through carefully curated design. The goal is for our Welcome Center to feel more like a welcome center at a national park. We will be sure to let every know when we reopen our doors, as we hope you will come to see us. We happily serve both locals and visitors.

Abigail Pierce – A Welcoming New Face to

Henderson County Cooperative Extension

When you walk in the front door at Henderson County Cooperative Extension, you are likely to be greeted by a new addition to our office. Abigail Pierce joined our staff on January 3, 2023, as our new Support Specialist.

Abigail’s primary responsibilities will include greeting clients, answering phones, and managing our social and digital media. You may have already seen some of her posts on our Facebook pages and thanks to her, we are now on Instagram. We hope you will connect with us there.

Abigail graduated from Harrison High School in Kennesaw, GA, and received a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Communications from the University of Georgia. Her Ag Comm background will be a great asset to our office as we reach an increasing number of our clientele through digital means. She definitely ups our game in that arena with her expertise and skills.

Most recently, Abigail worked as an assistant teacher at FernLeaf Community Charter School in Fletcher. Prior to that, she was a school nutrition assistant and garden educator with FoodCorps and the Jackson County (GA) School System. In that role, she helped connect with farmers and distributors to purchase local food for the 11 school cafeterias in the district.

In that role, she developed a relationship with a local cattle farm and managed weekly orders of meat to the cafeterias. She also planned and taught nutrition and garden lessons to the Pre-K through 5th-grade students.

Other previous experiences include six summers with Gwynn Valley Camp in Brevard as a cabin counselor and farm program leader. She also participated in an unpaid internship program that took her to Monteverde, Costa Rica. In that role, she managed crop production and assisted in the care of cows, pigs, and chickens. She facilitated connections with community members to share permaculture farm practices and research.

Additionally, Abigail worked for Raindance Organic Farm in Whitmore Lake, MI where she was the assistant farm manager. She helped manage the seeding, transplanting, and maintenance of the fruits, vegetables, and herbs on the farm. In a similar role, she was the assistant farm manager of the University of Georgia’s 4-acre organic farm where she supervised student workers and community volunteers.

We are delighted to have Abigail’s diverse background in our office. We know that she will be a great asset to Henderson County Cooperative Extension as well as our clientele. We intend to get her out to many of our farms and events to utilize her extensive background in agriculture to help enhance our programs. So be looking for Abigail at Extension events around the county. Come in and welcome her to our office. She’ll likely be the first person you encounter when you enter our doors.

Casey McNeel Joins Henderson County Cooperative Extension

as 4-H Program Assistant

Henderson County Cooperative Extension has some new faces to start 2023. One of those is Casey McNeel. Casey joined our staff on January 3, 2023, as our 4-H Program Assistant. She will be assisting the 4-H program and will be in charge of special programs such as sewing/quilting, Ag Day Camp, the FRESH program at the Carl Sandburg Home as well as many other activities.

Casey comes to us from Warrensburg, MO after relocating to western North Carolina late last year. Casey earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Missouri State University in Geography, Geotourism, and Entrepreneurial Studies. She also has a Professional Certificate in Sustainable Farming from the University of Vermont.

Most recently, Casey worked for Powell Gardens in Kingsville, MO. Powell Gardens is the Botanical Garden of Kansas City. The Garden covers over 900 acres and features over 6,000 varieties of plants. Casey was a senior gardener at the gardens for almost three years where she helped create the season displays, managed volunteer projects, and helped with garden maintenance.

She also has experience as a produce manager with Natural Provisions in Williston, VT. Casey also has experience in the apple industry having worked for Chaplain Orchards in Vermont. She worked in the farm market, the cidery, and the bakery as well as the orchard where she helped graft trees.

We’re happy to have someone with such a diverse background join our team. Her experience in the horticulture arena as well as the apple industry will serve her well in her new position. Be watching for the new programs 4-H will soon be offering as Casey gets them up and running.

Come by and welcome Casey to Henderson County and see what 4-H has to offer your family. Maybe we can get her hooked on Henderson County apples. We grow a few more here than they do in Vermont.
