The weather outside may be frightful, but we’ve already set our sights on summer and the fun to be had at Summer Literacy Camp.
Since 2005, United for Literacy has been collaborating with Indigenous communities across Canada to reduce the summer learning slide, which is the information that is lost when kids are out of school if they don’t continue reading and exploring. Literacy Camp keeps kids engaged outside of the classroom.
This past summer, Summer Literacy Camp ran in 97 communities and had 2,680 participants. We’re proud to say that we delivered 14,012 free, high-quality, new books—including books by Indigenous authors—and 2,604 learning kits to children and their families.
One camper in Saskatchewan said, “I’d rather be here than at home. Literacy camp is fun!” We couldn’t agree more!
