Employee Spotlight
We would like to introduce you to our Clinical Director, Paulette Tarkin.

Paulette started in the operating room right out of school in Lincoln Nebraska in a large hospital. She learned various specialties from ENT, plastics, CV, orthopedics to general surgery. After gaining vast experience in her first position, she decided to travel as an OR nurse for 2 years to NC, KS, NE where she received an unbelievable amount of experience in transplant, cardiac and trauma surgery.

Returning to Omaha, she joined the staff at Creighton University Medical Center, a level 1 trauma center with 25 operating rooms, where she became the OR manager. Life took her to Minneapolis, MN in 2005 where she then took a travel position at the University of Minnesota Medical Center on the adult and pediatric cardiovascular team for 1 year.

Pittsburgh became her home in July 2006. Her daughter Lily was born a year later. She took some time off to stay at home with her daughter for several years. As most of us parents can relate, Lily became the center of Paulette's world!

She returned to work as a pre-op/PACU and OR nurse at Laurel Surgery Center. During that same time, she worked as a private duty nurse and had the pleasure of taking care of an amazing little boy, Dr. Lazzaro's grandson. Her strong work ethic and superior patient care led her to be recruited to the Aestique Surgery Center in December, 2016.

She comes from a family of nurses with both her mother and sister are operating room nurses. Her mother was the Chief Nursing Officer of an independent orthopedic hospital and her sister is a Director of Peri-operative Services in Omaha so I guess you could say nursing is in their blood!

We invite you to meet Paulette the next time you have a procedure scheduled at Aestique Surgery Center.

CO2 Laser by Dr. Shawn Echard
What are Plantar Warts?
Warts are one of several soft tissue conditions of the foot that can be quite painful. They are caused by a virus and can appear anywhere on the skin.
Children, especially teenagers, tend to be more susceptible to warts than adults.

Identification Problems
Most warts are harmless, but they may be painful. They are often mistaken for corns or calluses. The wart, however, is a viral infection. Plantar warts tend to be hard and flat, with a rough surface and well-defined boundaries; warts are generally raised and fleshier when they appear on the top of the foot or on the toes. Plantar warts are often gray or brown (but the color may vary), with a center that appears as one or more pinpoints of black. It is important to note that warts can be very resistant to treatment and have a tendency to reoccur.

Source of the Virus
The plantar wart is often contracted by walking barefoot on dirty surfaces or littered ground where the virus is lurking. The causative virus thrives in warm, moist environments, making infection a common occurrence in communal bathing facilities.

Self treatment is generally not advisable. Over-the-counter preparations contain acids or chemicals that destroy skin cells, and it takes a skilled hand to do without also destroying surrounding healthy tissue. Self treatment with such medications especially should be avoided by people with diabetes and those with cardiovascular or circulatory disorders. Never use them in the presence of an active infection.

Professional Treatment
Often times, Dr. Echard will recommend removal of warts by a simple surgical procedure, performed under local anesthetic. Lasers have become a common and effective treatment. A procedure known as CO2 laser cautery is performed under local anesthesia at Aestique Surgical Center. The laser reduces post-treatment scarring and is a safe form for eliminating wart lesions.

To schedule your consultation with Dr. Echard and see if the CO2 laser is right for you, call (724) 832-7880 or visit his website at Laurel Podiatry.
October is National
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
You Have the Power to Fight Breast Cancer
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And whether you Race for the Cure , Make Strides against Breast Cancer or buy a “pink” item that benefits the cause, the most important thing you can do to help fight breast cancer is take control of your own breast health.

Early Detection is Key
Catching any disease early gives you more options for treatment and a better chance of living a longer, healthier life. And that’s especially true for breast cancer – and the two and half million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

The American Cancer Society recommends the following guidelines for finding breast cancer early:
  1. A monthly breast self-exam for all women starting in their 20s. Any changes in how breasts look or feel should be reported to a doctor right away.
  2. A clinical breast exam, from a doctor or nurse, for women in their 20s and 30s at least every 3 years. After age 40, women should have a breast exam by a doctor or nurse every year.
  3. A yearly mammogram for women age 40 and older (as long as they are in good health). While mammograms can miss some cancers, they are still a very good way to detect breast cancer.

Helpful Mammogram Tips from the American Cancer Society
  • Schedule your mammogram when your breasts are not tender or swollen to help reduce discomfort and to ensure a good picture. Try to avoid the week just before your period.
  • On the day of your mammogram, don't wear deodorant or antiperspirant. Some of these contain ingredients that can interfere with the reading of the mammogram.
  • You might want to wear a skirt or pants, so you'll only need to remove your top for the exam.
  • If you do not hear from your doctor within 10 days, do not assume your mammogram was normal – call your doctor or the facility to follow up.

You can find more mammogram tips and information from the American Cancer Society’s Web site at www.cancer.org.

You Have the Power
You can’t prevent breast cancer, but you do have the power to take charge and make sure you get the screenings you need to detect any health problems early.
