Service Spotlight
Tear Duct Surgery by Dr. Phillip Choo
Tears are essential for our eyes health. They can show our emotion - whether its happiness or sadness and they can protect our eyes by removing irritants. But what happens if you can't shed those tears?

Our tears are made in glands in our body called lacrimal glands. They are then transported through tubes called tear ducts which basically acts as a drainage system for the eye. The tears then drain into small holes in the inside corner of the upper and lower eyelids. A blockage in any part of this delicate draining system can prevent proper tear draining and lead to excess tearing or infected tear duct system.

Procedures to correct this can include:
  • Nasolacrimal duct probing and intubation (open tear duct and place a stent)
  • Dacryocystorhinostomy (open new tear duct to bypass blockage)
  • Conjunvtivo-dacryocystorhinostomy (place Jones tube to drain tears directly to nasal cavity)
