She Can Win
A Message from Jasmine E. Sessoms, Founder of She Can Win
This week I am writing an open letter to my dear friend and fellow Founder- La’Tasha D. Mayes.
La’Tasha is the Founder, President, CEO, and the face of Reproductive Justice in PA. This Week La’Tasha announced that she would retire from running New Voice for Reproductive Justice.

Dear Tash,

Almost 20 years of running an organization. That seems like a few lifetimes. When I think about how you grew New Voices from an idea into what we see today, I know it had its challenging times and high points.

I knew as soon as I met you, there was something special about you. We sat on a panel and the passion you had to see Black Women win and represented in all spaces drew us together because “real recognizes real”. As time went on our paths kept crossing- and we knew we were meant to change this state together.

From helping me expand SCW across the state, to Party At The Mailbox, and Shirley Chisholm Brunches to the iconic Say Her Name March- we have supported each other through the years. We never competed and always answered each other’s calls. When I couldn’t find my way to continue you would be there with an ear (and sometimes a bottle) to tell me this is my calling.

La’Tasha D Mayes- you have made not just our Commonwealth a better place to live work and play- you have made the world a better place. We can’t talk about Reproductive Justice and not mention your name.

So well done thy good and faithful servant. Go forth and set the world on fire and all that jazz… I am sad for me to lose my ally in the fight for black women’s rights, but ecstatic to see your next step. And what mark you will leave next.

Forever in awe,
Jazz
