Fire Prevention and Safety

October is Fire Safety Month, making it a good time to review simple steps to help prevent fires and keep your home and family safe.

  • Test smoke alarms regularly. Replace alarms that are more than 10 years old and replace batteries as needed.
  • Never leave cooking unattended and keep anything that can catch fire away from the stove.
  • Avoid overloading electrical outlets and replace damaged or frayed cords.
  • When charging lithium-ion batteries, use the proper charger and avoid charging devices on beds or couches.
  • Stop using batteries that are damaged, swollen or overheating.

Every household should have a fire escape plan that everyone knows. Identify at least two ways out of each room, when possible, and establish a meeting place outside. Keep hallways, doors and other exits clear so everyone can get out quickly in an emergency.

Taking these simple precautions can make a big difference in protecting you, your family and your home from fire.

News and Updates

Campaign Sign Rules

The City of Coral Gables reminds residents that temporary, noncommercial signs, including political and campaign signs, must comply with the city's Zoning Code.

Temporary, noncommercial signs may be displayed for up to 120 days. During the 90 days preceding a national, state or local election through five days after Election Day, residents may display up to three temporary, noncommercial signs per building, lot or tenant space, provided all other zoning requirements are met.

These regulations help promote public safety by reducing visual clutter, minimizing traffic distractions and limiting potential hazards during severe weather, while protecting First Amendment rights.

Residents are also reminded that the deadline to request a vote-by-mail ballot is 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22.

Avoid Dengue Fever

Living in a tropical climate offers plenty of sunshine and lush surroundings, but it also means dealing with mosquitoes that can spread illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 485 cases of dengue fever in Florida this year, with 157 cases in Miami-Dade County. Dengue fever spreads through the bites of infected mosquitoes and can cause infections.

Take the following preventive measures to protect yourself:

  • Apply insect repellent to exposed skin or clothing.
  • Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved clothes when going outside.
  • Stop mosquitoes from breeding by emptying or covering anything that can hold water at least once a week.
  • Keep mosquitoes out of your home by using air conditioning and maintaining screens on all windows.

Scooter Safety Reminder

The city is committed to keeping sidewalks safe and enjoyable for everyone. Geofenced no-ride zones are in place for the sidewalks on Miracle Mile, Ponce from Alhambra Circle to Almeria Avenue and Giralda Plaza. Rental scooters automatically power down in these areas, and riders receive an alert to turn around.

Riders must follow all rules, including no tandem riding and properly parking devices so they do not obstruct sidewalks. Privately owned scooters and bicycles must also follow no-ride zones, which are clearly marked with signs.

All riders and cyclists are reminded to put safety first and follow the rules of the road.
