Subject: Doing What you Love/Loving What you do
Sometimes it is the intangibles in life that make all the difference in our experience. Joy is certainly one of these. On a physiological level Joy helps our body produce a hormone called Oxytocin which gives us a feeling of wellbeing and comfort. Oxytocin helps to counter stress and the Fight or Flight response. There was a time long ago when I had a powerful lesson in Joy and one that I will always remember.
I was traveling on a sailboat in the carribean which sounds idylic but was stressful since I was in a relationship that was falling apart. Eventually the women that I was with departed and I was left alone on the boat in one of the most beautiful places in the world. You would think that being in paradise would have been enough but I lapsed into a depression from being alone and decided that I would become a seeker of joy. You see I was deriving a lot of my happiness from the relationship and when my partner left there was a huge hole that needed to be filled. Or at least that's what I thought.
So each day I would go out looking for joy as if it was something to search for because it felt terribly lacking in my being. One day I can remember specifically. I was walking on a beach off of Cruz Bay on the island of St.John thinking I really need more Joy in my life when I spotted something floating in the water off of the shore.
As I approached I noticed the object floating was bright yellow and to my surprise it was an unopened bottle of liquid joy detergent.
It seemed that my prayers were being answered and I had finally found joy!!
What I eventually understood from this was that I was looking for something that was outside myself and also that God has a sense of humor. After that incident I started an internal discovery process and found that what i was looking for was inside of me all of the time and i had to look no further than myself. Everything changed after that and I continued sailing thru the carribean and eventually brought the boat home on my own and re-started my practice.
The point is that sometimes the things that we are looking for are right inside of us. In many ways we have the tools and resources to follow our hearts and find joy inside and in our daily lives.
