E-NEWS: Sept. 23, 2026

Rainy Days and Rising Tides

With South Florida's rainy season already underway and rain falling nearly every day during the past week residents are encouraged to remain prepared for heavy downpours, thunderstorms and localized flooding. Wet weather is expected to continue in the coming days, while high tides may approach or exceed flood thresholds in certain areas from Sept. 24 through Oct. 15.

King tides can contribute to street and property flooding in low-lying areas, particularly along Coral Gables' 42 miles of coastline and waterways. With peak high tides typically occurring from September through December, residents should stay informed and take precautions when heavy rain and high tides coincide.

Residents should never drive through flooded areas. They can also help the city document king tide flooding by submitting photos to sustainability@coralgables.com. Keeping drains and catch basins clear of leaves, debris and landscaping materials can also reduce the risk of flooding. Clearing these areas before forecast rainfall helps water flow properly and supports the city's drainage system.

These simple precautions can help protect homes, neighborhoods and the community throughout South Florida's rainy and king tide seasons.

Water Treatment

The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department will conduct its annual chlorine conversion from Sept. 28 through Oct. 11. During this period, some customers may notice a temporary chlorine taste or smell, brief reductions in water pressure or cloudy water. These conditions do not affect water quality. If water appears cloudy, run the tap for three to five minutes until it clears.

Dialysis patients should consult their physicians, while owners of tropical fish and businesses with fish-holding tanks should seek guidance from aquarium professionals. For water-quality questions, call 786-552-4181.
