From Mother Carey

Dear Friends,

The Bishop Comes!

On December 12th the Rt. Rev. Susan Ellyn Goff, Bishop Suffragan and Ecclesiastical Authority of the Diocese of Virginia will come to St. Christopher’s. The bishop’s coming is always an exciting day and especially so for those who wish to be confirmed, received or reaffirmed in the Episcopal Church. Confirmation is the next step for those who have been baptized as infants and now for the first time want to commit themselves to Christ and to receive the laying of hands by the bishop.

Reception is for those who come from another denomination and want to know more about their new faith and be formally received into it.

Reaffirmation is for those who have been baptized in the Episcopal Church and would like to renew their baptismal vows.

Here at St. Christopher’s we will have a group of youth – generally ages 13 and above, who want to explore their faith and move towards confirmation. We will also have adults who wish to be received, reaffirmed or confirmed.

We will have an organizational meeting of those who would like to know more about these options and the classes to prepare on Thursday, August 5th at 7 pm via Zoom. If you cannot attend but are interested in participating or have a child who is interested, please email Mother Carey.

Peace,

Carey +

Marifran's Musings as Senior Warden

I’ve noticed over the years that not only are there needs, whether social, outreach, buildings, grounds, but that we have parishioners who recognize these needs and step up to take care of them. Most recently, our Buildings & Grounds commissioners with assistance from others, identified a few dead trees in our woods. These will be removed, leaving several feet of the dead wood to provide habitat for birds. Firewood is available from these trees so let us know if you want any. Many of you have noticed the irregularities in our sidewalk. We recently had one portion, just before the breezeway, removed and replaced. Other bumps are being ground down and caulked to help provide a smoother walk from the parking lots to the church buildings. For years, we’ve had water problems in our buildings and have contracted to have these fixed. There are still some needs, one of which is to remove mold in the Education Building basement and make it so no more mold grows. We have a contract for this and hope to have it fixed before the school year begins. As you notice anything you think needs to be fixed, please let the appropriate Vestry person or one of the wardens know so that we can investigate and try to fix. And, better yet, please volunteer when we ask for help, whether it’s for a work day, help in the Outreach Garden, provide snacks or assistance for coffee hour and receptions, or any of a number of needs throughout the year. Then, enjoy our campus, activities, and especially our worship together.

A Message from the Preschool Board: You are invited to serve on the board of St. Christopher's Preschool! As part of its regular rotation of board members, the six-member Preschool Board needs two new members to serve three-year terms starting this coming August. The Preschool Board meets once a month, usually for 1½ - 2 hours. The Board oversees preschool finances; sets policy with respect to educational philosophy, admissions, scholarships, and staffing; and advises and supports the Preschool Director. If you've thought about getting more involved at St. Christopher's but have limited time to offer, the Preschool Board is a great opportunity. For more information or to express interest, contact the Board chair, Jen Guernsey, at jenguernsey@gmail.com or 703-912-9242.

Fellowship Host/(s) wanted!

St. Christopher’s is regathering for worship! Coffee hour and fellowship time is a liturgical ministry to us, and it is an important ministry for the regathering phase as it allows the parish members to see and enjoy one another. We would love for you to sign up and volunteer for Sundays. If you no longer wish to be on the guild due to personal concerns about re-entering public spaces after a long time away, we understand and hope to have you back with us soon. Please email Dani Gudakunst, dzahoran@gmail.com if you are interested.

July is ECHO Food Collection Month

Now that we're back worshipping in person, we can honor our commitment to collect food in July for ECHO. ECHO is our neighborhood social service organization, of which St. Christopher's is a founding member. They have been operating for over 50 years. I take several bags of canned meat to ECHO about twice a month, as that's one of their greatest requests.

Although folks are going back to work, the requests for food are great as folks that needed food during the pandemic are entering low-paying jobs. So, we can help. Also, ECHO is taking other donations of clothes. So, those can be left in the ECHO box.

Let's fill the ECHO wooden box in the Fellowship Hall each week. For the outside service participants, the box will be outside by the Worship Building doors. For Zoom participants, please drop food by the church during the week or call me for pickup. You can also drop food by ECHO on Old Keene Mill by the 7-Eleven.

So, what does ECHO want? Here's a list from ECHO's website (ECHO-inc.org). Also you can always donate to St. C's Outreach Fund and I'll do the shopping.

Holy Hikes

Saturday, August 7 at 9:30

Holy Hike Saturday, Aug. 7 at Teddy Roosevelt Island

We hope you can join us for our next monthly “Holy Hike” at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7 at Theodore Roosevelt Island in D.C. For your convenience, we’ll leave St. Christopher’s at 9:30 a.m. and carpool from there if anyone needs a ride.

T.R. Island is a splendid, 88-acre park located along the George Washington Parkway near Rosslyn. It’s like a wilderness in the city with forests, tidal marsh, a long boardwalk and more. We’ll walk to the center of the island where we’ll find a statue to our 26th president, surrounded by a fountain and giant tablets etched with Roosevelt’s famous quotes.

Then, we’ll explore the trails around the isle with the whole activity probably lasting 1-1 1/2 hours. See you there. Upcoming: Sept. 4, Holy Hike at beautiful Sky Meadows State Park in Paris, Va.
