The Town of Courtland and the Helping Hand Cemetery lost a dedicated supporter with the passing of Maxine Darden Nowlin. When you walk the grounds of the cemetery, Maxine's spirit is always there reminding you of the love and devotion with which she cared for the Helping Hand Cemetery and those interred there.


We will always remember her.

Membership


Our goal is to maintain the Helping Hand Cemetery (HHC) as an eternal resting place for friends, relatives and loved ones. Your financial support is essential and crucial for scheduled annual maintenance.

There are several methods to support HHC.

 

  •  Life Time Membership - $500 (one time payment – no annual

membership dues)

  •   Annual Membership - $60
  •   Friends of HHC – Donations - Any amount, any time!
  •   In Kind Service – Work on special projects as determined by the HHC Board.

Important Cemetery Information!

After a year long research effort by HHC Trustees, most of our estimated 175 unknowns are now KNOWN! Our Helping Hand Directory will soon be updated to reflect these names. Our "KNOWNS" however, are still in unmarked graves. In order to memorialize those who were once unknown, our next project will be to erect a monument in memory of these ancestors.

Below are samples of monuments we feel would be appropriate.

We would love to have your input/suggestions.

MISSION STATEMENT


The mission of the Helping Hand Cemetery Club is to improve and to maintain the cemetery as a peaceful, dignified, safe, and beautiful place worthy of its historical recognition. HHC is the link to the legacy and heritage of the African-American community of Courtland, Virginia. In addition, HHCC's mission is to receive and to acquire additions to the cemetery and to sell lots and burial rights therein.
