Memorial of Saint Cornelius, pope and martyr, and Saint Cyprian, bishop and martyr
And My Soul Shall Be Healed
Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed.

As you know, some of the words of the Mass change frequently, depending on the liturgical season or the feast being celebrated. Other words and prayers are used at every Mass, and that’s the case with the prayer listed above. And precisely because these words become so familiar to us, it’s good to step back and think about what we are saying, what we are praying, and what the words mean.

NARRAGANSETT — Father Joseph Creedon, a senior priest in the Diocese of Providence known around the country for his writings and public speaking, has published a devotional book titled “Walking in the Light of His Word: Daily Scripture Reflections.”

The book, published in March by Stillwater River Publications, contains brief reflections on a Bible passage connected to each Sunday of the year, as well as for those associated with Daily Mass, Holy Days of Obligation and Solemnities.

Gratitude for their many years of faithful service
Priest Retirement Fund collection to take place the weekend of September 17 and 18
PROVIDENCE — For years after parish and other assignments, priests in the Diocese of Providence continue to serve Christ and the faithful through many selfless efforts.

Many may not realize that diocesan priests live independently in retirement. After active ministry, they no longer rely upon their parishes for support. To help retired priests meet every day needs like food, housing, transportation and health care, the diocese established the Senior Priest Retirement Fund in the mid-1960s. This year, the Priest Retirement Fund collection will take place the weekend of September 17 and 18.

PROVIDENCE — Our Lady of Providence Seminary marked the opening of its new academic year on Sept. 6 with Holy Mass celebrated by Bishop Thomas J. Tobin, followed by a dinner with the seminarians studying there.

The bishop, in his opening remarks in the chapel, said that he is always happy to visit the seminary, especially at the opening of a new academic year.

“We come to pray this evening in a very particular way for the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit will help us have the faith and the wisdom and the courage of the Apostles who Jesus called,” Bishop Tobin said.

Diocese of Providence maintains hotline to report suspected financial misconduct
Phone line, website offer ways to report suspected fraud anonymously

PROVIDENCE — In its continuing mission to strengthen financial accountability throughout its operations, the Diocese of Providence provides a means for anyone who suspects financial misconduct in any area to report their concerns anonymously.

In January 2013, the diocese established a financial accountability hotline for individuals to report potential financial fraud. Bishop Thomas J. Tobin approved the program after a review by the Diocesan Administrative Board, Finance Council and Council of Priests.
The service is designed to complement existing policies within the diocese that provide for fiscal accountability.

The hotline is monitored by the independent risk assessment company Navex Global, a firm known for its community-driven approach to the areas of ethics and compliance.

CUMBERLAND — On Saturday, Sept. 10, the annual Diocesan Youth Day was held at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Cumberland. The event was attended by approximately 150 high school and college-aged youths from parishes throughout the state.

The title for this year’s theme was “I am,” taken from the “I am” teachings of Jesus in the Gospel of John.

“We’re very excited to be here. This is a very special event,” said Louise Dussault, director of diocesan Catholic Youth Ministry, who organized the day’s program along with other ministry leaders.

Memories of past hurts renew hope for peaceful future, pope says

NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan (CNS) — The painful memories of the persecution of Christians in Kazakhstan serve as a reminder that peace “must be achieved anew each day,” Pope Francis said.

Celebrating Mass on the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross Sept. 14 at the Expo grounds in Nur-Sultan, the pope said that, much like the people of Israel experienced serpent bites in the desert, the people of Kazakhstan felt the painful bites from the “fiery serpents of violence, atheistic persecution and all those troubled times when people’s freedom was threatened and their dignity offended.”

“We do well to keep alive the memory of those sufferings and not forget certain grim moments; otherwise, we can consider them water under the bridge and think that now, once and for all, we are on the right road,” he said.
